What went wrong? The Sam Darnold Experiment (Video)
LinvilleGorge replied to CarolinaLivin's topic in Carolina Panthers
I don't think it's fixable. You have to just naturally have it. To excel in professional sports you basically have to be able to go into instinct mode once the play is live. If you're trying to consciously think you're going to be too slow. It's not the same as being stupid. I don't think it has anything to do with actual intelligence. It's just how your brain works and whether or not you have a natural aptitude for it. There are a lot of smart people and critical thinkers who would do extremely poorly in that type of situation because their natural instinct is to stop and think the situation through. -

I don't know about all that. I doubt the ancient Egyptians had many concerns about accidentally overdosing from high powered synthetic opioids. -

Darnold is a one read QB. He locks onto his first read and it's basically too late to salvage the play by the time he comes off of that read. Darnold looks good in two situations. 1. His initial read is open and he can deliver the ball on schedule as planned. 2. He gets pressured immediately and has to hit his check down. That's basically it. He does his worst work when he gets decent protection and his first read is covered so he needs to go through his progression. He's too slow. He'll end up panicking and forcing something or taking the sack. Unfortunately, that situation where he's the worst is what happens on most NFL passing plays. -

I think hyperbole is leading you to saying dumb stuff. You're gonna have a really tough time naming 50 better QBs. Palmer is #15 all-time in passing yardage and #14 in passing TDs. Best of luck with your list of 50. -

I honestly think that's why they hid Darnold in the preseason. Once they had the opportunity to work with him and found out how limited he was they knew they had to minimize film on him in our offensive system. They couldn't afford giving opposing DCs anything to work with in games that didn't count. -

It was kind of an afterthought when it was "just" hardcore heroin addicts impacted by this but fentanyl is showing up in everything now. If you're doing any sort of street drugs these days you're playing some real Russian roulette. That includes street purchased prescription pills. Pill presses are cheap. There's no guarantee that pill is what you think it is. -

Yep. Elite talent can obviously come from anywhere. Just look at the NFL. All kinds of good players from small schools or "also ran" P5 programs. But when it comes to overall team talent, there's a massive gap between the elite programs and everyone else. Those rosters are stacked with 4 and 5 star recruits. The also ran get a small handful of those types of recruits per year. The elite programs pretty much don't even talk to you unless you are one of those guys. The elite small school talents were diamonds in the rough and/or late bloomers. Basically the NFL equivalents of late round or UDFA steals. -

Yep. The elite programs would still be borderline top 25 teams if they were playing their 2nd stringers. The talent discrepancy is massive. -

38-21 in Arizona. Cinci's defense was bad to terrible for most of his years. When they had a good defense they went 10-6. Hell, they went 11-5 with a defense ranked in the bottom third. Palmer wasn't great but he was consistently one of those solidly top 10, borderline top 5 type of QBs. If you wouldn't take that for our current Panthers you done gone crazy. I mean, we basically tried like hell to trade the future of the franchise for that type of QB while he was facing dozens of sexual misconduct allegations. Marinate on that one. -

6 seasons with 25+ TDs. 6 seasons with 4000+ yards. Dude, we'd sell our souls right now for prime Carson Palmer. *Damn, I honestly didn't remember how good Palmer was until I looked it up. The guy is a borderline HOFer. Game manager... -
Any German luxury vehicle that's over 5 years old and/or has over 75k miles on it... don't walk away, fuging RUN. A college buddy of mine's dad managed a DC area BMW dealership. His old saying was "if you can't afford a BMW with a factory warranty on it then you sure as hell can't afford one out of warranty." A former neighbor had an Audi that lived in the shop. It was probably only 5-6 years old and had under 100k miles. He said it couldn't enter the shop without at least a $1500 bill. He traded it for a brand new loaded Chevy Duramax diesel. He swore the payments on that truck totaled less per year than the maintenance on that Audi.

Yep, I think he struck while the iron was hot. It's not like he has been an afterthought in the NFL. The guy has had four years with coaching staffs devoting their focus and efforts on developing and preparing him as a starting QB. -

Nah man, it's way worse than that. He threw for less than 800 yards and single digit TDs in HS. They moved him all over the place from QB, to TE, to LB trying to figure out how to maximize his talents. Hell, even his HS coaches realized this dude isn't a QB. -

Honestly, I think 90% of the league was already there when we traded for him. If we cut him today I doubt very seriously he would generate anything other than short term low money "prove it" deal offers with zero opportunities to enter camp penciled in as the starter. Looking around the league, I honestly don't see many if any situations where he could even compete for a starting job. I mean, if you're on a roster with a 3rd round rookie and a guy who couldn't get an NFL contract until your college coach landed an NFL gig and they're still shopping and unwilling to commit to you... well, I mean it's tougher to imagine a more gift wrapped opportunity than that. If you can't start here you probably can't start anywhere. -

Sam Darnold is what went wrong. He's a talented thrower of the football but he's a terrible QB. Being a talented thrower does not necessarily make a good QB. It's like being a WR with a 4.3 40. Yeah, that's nice and all... but can you actually play?- 71 replies

A team throwing in the towel on a top 10 draft pick after only one season is about as big as red flags get. Second only to actually watching a guy suck out loud and being probably the worst starting QB in the NFL for three seasons. I guess being accused by a sizable portion of the American female population of sexual misconduct deserves a mention as well.

Good grief. Does your billionaire simping know no bounds? -
Tannehill is a legit decent QB. Darnold is a legit terrible QB. There's a big gap between the two. Do I want to trade for Tannehill? No. That would probably take significant assets and I'm not for spending significant future assets on what is at this point a failed coaching regime.

How prepared are you for another hilariously miserable season?
LinvilleGorge replied to hepcat's topic in Carolina Panthers
Very. It seems inevitable. It will seem inevitable for as long as Rhule is here. I'm starting to think that may be the case for Tepper as well. He's gonna have to accept reality and hire competent football people and let them do their jobs or we're going to be a perennial bottom feeder. He just needs to be honest with himself. Would he hire Bill Belichick and Tom Brady to run a hedge fund? Brilliance and unparalleled success in one field doesn't necessarily translate to another and he's finding that out the hard way. -
Sheena Quick on Baker Mayfield to Panthers trade

I kinda get that vibe too. -
How much would you trade for Baker for 1 year rental?
LinvilleGorge replied to Cam's New Arm's topic in Carolina Panthers
I agree that he's better than most people think. I disagree he's with that though. His attitude and locker room concerns are LEGIT. That wouldn't matter if he was Patrick Mahomes but he ain't Patrick Mahomes. -

A 5th and they pay half his salary. I'd do that. That's worth the risk.
