Sundae Conversation with Xavier Legette (Caleb Presley interview)
TD alt replied to dep's topic in Carolina Panthers
I mean it's called comedy, and it's---literally---not to be taken seriously. -
It's going to take more than that.

I ain't buying it. You run to set up the pass and pass to set up the run. You gotta have at least the threat of legit deep shots. And, last I looked, a deep pass is only 20 yards, so what are we doing here? Football 101 by Top Dawg: Look, you draft the best players (and that's perhaps even more important at offensive skill positions). You develop them. You keep your pipeline active year after year. On game days, you run to set up the pass, and pass to set up the run. If they can't stop the run, you run it down their throats. When they do stop the run, pass it, even if you dink and dunk it. But, you have to pepper in deep shots to keep them honest. When they get comfortable with stopping or trying to stop the pass, you run it. Rinse and repeat and rinse and repeat. Being a one-winged bird on offense is not optimal.

I mean, he really didn't say anything specific. There were a lot of generalities. Of course we need to invest in defense like we have on offense, execute in the draft, and develop the players so we can start reaping the benefits and see the plan come to life on the football field. That's what it's all about.

I think he's an impediment to any receiver because he rarely hits a receiver in stride, but X would certainly benefit if he is hit in stride because it takes him a while to get going. He may be fast, but he's not quick, and he's not really twitchy either. I'm just glad that Bryce looked his way for a change. I don't think we'll have that problem with Dalton.

Hey, I'm lost, and I sure as hell don't feel like listening to a vid of conjecture and projection based on one game, but...Even if dude didn't come right out and say it, if he's saying that X can have those types of games more than not, he's basically saying it. Just curious as to why you have to hear it explicitly. My thing is is that a 1000 yards has been kind of the benchmark for receivers by fans and analysts for at least two decades now (though I could argue that we probably need to set a higher expectation). That being said, all a receiver has to do across 17 games is average approximately 59 receiving yards per game. I don't think that's an insurmountable height to reach even for a WR2 in many offenses. In one of these threads, someone was saying X has averaged 29. That's an unacceptable number. Bless him if he can average 92, because he'd be getting more than 1500 (going on 1600) per season. Why someone would think he'd be able to do that under Bryce and a team that needs to run, I don't know. Maybe I do need to listen to the vid.

Speaking of revisiting trades: Brian Burns
TD alt replied to Peon Awesome's topic in Carolina Panthers
That may be, but he has been the best "complimentary" piece. Hell, there is an argument that the others are the complimentary pieces. I still ain't mad. What's done is done, but I'll always look at those two firsts as the trade that got away. We lost a ton of value, from not take ng the Rams' offer, and now we seemingly lost a bit more due to his current play. It's been a acknowledged, now let's move on because that's all that we can do. -
I think we will surprise. We'll run all over them, and Dalton will be able to spread the ball around more effectively than Bryce. I just don't see a blowout like some are predicting. I heard the same thing about the Cowboys, but the Bills don't have anything close to Pickens. Not guaranteeing a win or anything, but it is possible. It will be closer than people think.

Yeah, I have to admit that Rico appears to have some pop that Chuba just doesn't have. I wouldn't have said that before yesterday though. And, yes, I've been a Chuba fan, but I also raised an eye when we gave him that contract. Now we're stuck with some difficult decisions.

Well, call it opinion. I mean from some perspective analyses are interpretations, but based upon facts that are used to draw conclusions. I can respect your opinion that there hasn't been enough time to draw a conclusion about either X's or Bryce's capability to meet what was considered their potential and expectations when they were drafted. What you should acknowledge is that others differ in that opinion and feel that there has been enough time, especially when juxtaposed against some others whom we could have drafted, or that perhaps some Huddlers are just tired of waiting. In my opinion, the Tepper era has been exhausting, so fans have a right to be impatient. What I would also say, is that at the end of the day, my original post is not so much about the disappointing play of X (or Bryce, really), but that there was a better option for the franchise and for Bryce in Ladd McConkey. Not to revisit all the points of players that we've drafted for the last decade, but the team hasn't necessarily done well, or even average to be honest. In light of how their respective careers have begun, and the observation that arguably damned near all star receivers flash generally multiple times during their rookie years, I don't see how anyone can say with a straight face that we shouldn't have chosen Ladd McConkey over Xavier Legette. That being said, I hope X can up his game to Ladd's level. Some may try and pigeon-hole Ladd into a slot position, ironically where I think X would be at his best, but the fact is is that Ladd can play effectively on the outside or the slot. More than a few people knew that Ladd was a polished receiver with high upside, but it just seems like the Panthers did not. What's done is done, so all I can do is hope that X becomes more consistent, and realizes some of that upside that compelled Dan Morgan to draft him.

I'm giving the kid some grace from returning from an injury. He's not necessarily going to be "springy" his first game, but he has enough goodwill in the tank from his rookie season to give him some time to get back into his norm. At this point, I personally am not anointing him anything but a very solid contributor, but that's good in my mind. I don't think anyone can say whether or not he's going to rise much further or whether he has hit his ceiling, but whether he has or hasn't, I'm glad that he's back.

Yeah, but you can define "fine" any which way you want. I define "fine" as OK, but not necessarily quite what you're expecting. In X's specific case, he needs to at least somewhat live up to his draft status. It would be nice if he consistently played like a high end WR2, but we'll see what happens. At this point, I'll just be happy if he is consistently productive and show that he's a legit NFL starter. If he keeps showing up in key moment and having 60-90 yardish games with a handful of scores every season, that will be "fine" to me (even if I was expecting, or at least hoping for, a little more). Like I said, we'll see what happens. Perhaps yesterday was the start of something.
