Recommendations for Recent Graduate?

The ideal job is usually not your first after college or grad. Bloom where planted as the old adage goes.

Get on somewhere, anywhere that offers solid money/benefits etc. That will free up your mental bandwidth to start gameplanning for bigger and better things.

I'm telling you volunteering where a company is doing a bunch of community stuff is a fantastic way to get your name and face in front of the right people.

I absolutely am all for marketing my abilities and networking with new people, but I don't know how much "volunteering" I can do with my bills every month. Is there a way to volunteer with a company part-time so that I can still work a job with a steady income? I'm just not sure how it works.

First off...

Congrats on the Masters. You are one tough mental cookie.

I'm guessing given you received yours Masters in English, you would probably like to be in the field (non education). Have you considered proposals?

http://www.apmp.org/ might be in the step in the right direction.

Thanks I appreciate it a lot.

I have heard people in the English department talk about proposal writing but I never looked into it seriously. I will definitely check it out. Thank you for the links!

I have to agree with Panthro.  Not saying you can't find something solid because that's a nice degree but he is right.

2 questions:

Did you take any years off between undergrad and grad school? And are you looking to jump into something related off the bat?

Well my undergrad career started in Biology and then veered towards English (big jump I know. My heart was never in biology but I was using it as a platform for a medical career. Didn't last long and I lost time because of it.). Once I got into the English program I finished the undergrad in 2 years and went straight through my Masters.

Honestly I am not picky at all right out of the gate. Hell I'm thinking about applying to Verizon in Wilmington because of convenience and opportunities to rise. Something within my focus would perhaps feel more fulfilling, but I understand that some things take time and circumstance to flesh out.

We hire a lot of english majors for our copywriter positions. We write website content for companies and email marketing newsletters.

As far as I know, we're still hiring right now. If you're in Charlotte and interested, PM me and I'll give you my email address.

That sounds like a great opportunity and I would be very interested but unfortunately I will be bound to the Wilmington area for about the next year.  I have no problems moving to Charlotte at all (or anywhere where an opportunity arises), but financially I won't be able to do so in the next 12 months. Wish I could. Thank you though.

The drummer in my band is an English major from UCLA.

He is now a drummer and an EMT.

That's funny, my inspiration for pursuing an English degree was my 10th grade English teacher. He was a lead singer and guitarist for a band that toured with White Zombie in the 90s. Talk about a cool ass teacher.

Find the field or company you want to go with, if it's not a school for now and find out from HR what they are doing in the community. Then see if once a month or every other month you are able to go and join.

Hit up your friends(non huddle-lol) and see what they have going on with their companies. Do the same there and you never know what person in charge of what dept you run into just by doing this.

Resume's and accolades and accomplishments are a dime a dozen. But seeing someone roll up their sleeves and interact with others and so much more of a person is seen that way.
