Pepper's Summer of Discontent?

Take it for what it's worth...

Peppers, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, speaks so infrequently -- he declined an interview request after practice yesterday -- that the little he does say is dissected for days. The quote led to a flood of angry talk-radio callers and message-board posters who questioned Peppers' commitment after he loudly declared in the offseason he had "maxed out" in Carolina.

A slew of preseason injuries have exposed Carolina's lack of depth, which is largely because of Peppers' monster contract. The Panthers didn't sign one unrestricted free agent from another team and lost several key backups this offseason because Peppers' $18.2 million cap figure takes up about 14 percent of Carolina's available salary pool.

"You hate to say it's no big deal, but that's kind of what it is," quarterback Jake Delhomme said. "It's, ‘All right he's back.' That's pretty much it, because he never has a circus around him. I think that's the biggest thing."

It was a HUGE gamble to tag Peppers when you take both his statements about his intentions and his pricetag into consideration. Too big for my taste.

That said. This is a discussion for 90 days ago and not now. NOW we should be praying to anything and everything that he delivers double digit sacks and attracts enough attention where his salary can act as if it spreads across two players instead of one.

Any hack who brings this up now is just that..a hack.

And if you did not have the common sense to see the potential for problem then you might should keep your mouth shut now.

    • After watching Dan for 3 yrs now, I think I understand his plan. It’s a simple plan that should work for the long run.     I saw some of this last yr. Dan wants a vet and a young player at each position. I really think we go OT if one they like there. Moton is aging, Icky will not be back until 27, if ever. We need to get ahead of the tackle problem
    • You are just stressing too much about these particular positions. You want to upgrade from Bryce and I understand that but you aren’t going to really get that without getting into a bidding war for a QB2 potential QB1 like Willis. You could possibly trade for Mills or the backup for Chicago but they are still gambles and their teams will won’t decent picks.  Again the Eagles thought KP was a capable enough backup to trade for him once their backup was hurt and won a Super Bowl with him as QB2. The point is most teams aren’t rolling with some stud QB2/3 that is going to push even a bottom tier starter. They are better off the building their roster in other areas. The Rams are rolling with Bennett right now as QB2 for example.  The goal is winning absolutely. We overachieved last year even with stumbling into the playoffs. Another year and this staff needs to take the next step in building a team. Will Grier has little to no impact on that….
    • Three straight first round WRs is straight up Matt Millen poo. Considering the draft capital we have tied up on Bryce after that trade we would basically have spent damn near all of our draft capital in recent years on QB and WR just to put one of the most anemic passing offenses in the league on the field. Clown show poo.
