So long, Roscoe

Dukes of Hazzard star James Best passes away at age 88

Here's a surprising tidbit.

Later in life, after he had mostly retired from acting, Best went on to teach at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Roscoe P Coltrane as a professor?  Wonder what he taught.

Sorrell Booke (Boss Hogg) and Denver Pyle (Uncle Jesse) are also gone, Booke in 1994 and Pyle in 1997.

Of the three older series stars, only Best was alive to see that crap movie they made from the series.

What did he teach?

And did he ever break into his 'Roscoe' character while teaching?

Apparently he was a highly respected drama / acting teacher in Hollywood for a long time....

Best’s academic credentials include teaching motion picture technique and drama at the University of Mississippi, where he was artist-in-residence, and teaching at the University of Central Florida.

For 25 years, Best taught an acting technique class in Hollywood and worked with such celebrities as Gary Busey, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds, Teri Garr, Farrah Fawcett and Quentin Tarantino.

Another neat tidbit:

A dog named Flash

Fans of the program would remember Flash, a molasses-paced basset hound who accompanied Sheriff Coltrane on patrol.

Best rescued the dog from a pound and brought it to the set at the beginning of the third season, suggesting the sheriff needed a partner. Producers didn’t like the dog, but Best prevailed and she got a role.

I remember that dog

My dad was the biggest 'Dukes' fan you could find.  Whereas I remember thinking "this is the exact same story as last week" a lot.

Of course, when Daisy was on screen, neither me nor any other guy over the age of 12 gave a flying rip about the quality of the scripts

    • It's worth noting that we started playing something that looked like football after going down 17-0 against the Dolphins.  Up to that point we had rushed the ball 3 times and Bryce had two turnovers.   Then we ran it 5 straight times with Rico and he started cracking off some big gains and led to our first touchdown.  Another 37 yards of rushing later, Bryce goes 1 yard complete, incomplete, incomplete to get that field goal before halftime.  Then we committed big time to the run in the second half and played some really nice complimentary football.  The Panthers had stumbled on a formula, and it started with Rico being crazy productive.  Something they only learned because Chubba was injured and Bryce started that game so poorly they were forced to lean on Rico. Fast foward to Dallas, they essentially lean into the same game plan against the Cowboys and I think everyone was surprised by how quickly it started to look complimentary.  In my opinion the productive offense really helped the defense as well.  We played quite solid against a top offense. Finally we make our way to the Jets and Bills, Chubba's return.  You can't say the low scoring affair and return to ineffective football against the Jets was all on Chubba, they were indeed a better defense and so was Buffalo.  But the production difference between the two backs in both games was both visually and statistically obvious.  The bigger picture is the offense took a major step back as well.  They are other moving parts and it's isn't all one thing, BY9>Dalton by a decent margin at this point.   But yeah, Rico's vision and athleticism is just better than Chubba and it jumps at you.
    • First day in 3 weeks my pain started to dwindle just a tiny bit.  Got switched from hydrocodone to post-shingles pain patches.  My insurance refused to pay for my patches as I’m too young for shingles per them.  I also need a prescription to get shingles shot and insurance also won’t pay for it even thought I just had shingles and in high risk to get it again.
