"When they said no one makes it out of Rockdale County ... I'm just getting started. This is much bigger than myself. This for the kids they tell are too small to play Division 1 sports and chase their dream, for the kids they tell they aren't smart enough to graduate college, this for the kids that sacrifice just to chase a dream, this for the kids that's out there grinding while no one looking and all you other friends out running around "having all the fun," this for the kids that continue to study their books and challenge themselves in the classroom while others make fun of them, this for the kids that made a promise to their family, this for the kids that refuse to let any friend, coach, teacher, scout, hater, family member limit what they can accomplish. In last year’s game [vs. South Carolina], Jarrett was credited with 15 total tackles including two tackles for loss and generally created havoc.

“I think last year he played one of the greatest games of his college career,” said senior safety Robert Smith, Jarrett’s friend and roommate.

“Last year it was tough, really tough, probably had one of the better games of my career,” he said. “I felt terrible after that game, to see the hurt in my teammates and my coaches as a family.”

“Well, we turned him down three times initially and decided we’re not going to take him until he came to camp and he won every matchup,” Swinney said. “[At camp,] he wouldn’t go to the end of the line [during drills], he would get right up and go again. He was here to prove a point, and I’ve just never seen a guy work, ever, like I saw him work that day.

“I went up to the coaches and told them, ‘We’re going to take this guy.’ He may not be as tall as we want or whatever, but I’ve never seen a guy come through here like he has.” They decided not to even redshirt him:
