David Newton's updated Panthers Roster/Depth Chart

[Fidel Cashflow]

• QB: Cam Newton, Derek Anderson, Joe Webb

Comment: Keeping a third quarterback with the depth added, particularly at wide receiver, puts Joe Webb’s job in jeopardy.

• RB: Jonathan Stewart, Cameron Artis-Payne, Fozzy Whittaker, Darrin Reaves

Comment: Artis-Payne has played on the big stage at Auburn and can be that every-down back if Stewart is injured. Whittaker couldn’t.

• FB: Mike Tolbert, Richie Brockel

Comment: A Pro Bowl starter in Tolbert. No upgrades needed.

• WR1: Kelvin Benjamin, Jarrett Boykin, Stephen Hill

Comment: It’s hard to imagine Boykin and Hill making this roster unless they are so good in camp that more than one of the other receivers has to go.

• WR2: Devin Funchess, Jerricho Cotchery, Brenton Bersin

Comment: You could argue Jerricho Cotchery should be the starter here, but the Panthers invested too much in draft picks for Funchess not to start, if ready. Bersin’s days likely are numbered.

• Slot: Ted Ginn Jr., Philly Brown

Comment: Speed and special-teams value will keep both former Ohio State receivers on the roster.

• LT: Michael Oher, Nate Chandler

Comment: If Oher resurrects his career and plays well, then everything the Panthers did in the draft just looked smarter.

• LG: Andrew Norwell, Amini Silatolu, Edmund Kugbila

Comment: Silatolu will be a bonus if he can stay healthy.

• C: Ryan Kalil, Brian Folkerts

Comment: Kalil is the heart and soul of this line.

• RG: Trai Turner, Chris Scott, Tyronne Green

Comment: Turner was a steal in the third round last year; Scott is a promising project. Don’t be surprised to see Chandler get time here.

• RT: Mike Remmers, Jonathan Martin, Daryl Williams

Comment: Arguably the most competitive spot on the line. Remmers will open workouts as the starter, but don’t be surprised if Martin or Williams wins the job.

• TE: Greg Olsen, Ed Dickson, Brandon Williams

Comment: Perhaps the best group of tight ends in the NFC South. Olsen certainly is the best with Jimmy Graham gone from New Orleans to Seattle. DEFENSE

• LDE: Charles Johnson, Mario Addison

Comment: The development of Addison should help give Johnson some rest this season.

• LDT: Kawann Short, Colin Cole

Comment: Nothing not to like here.

• RDT: Star Lotulelei, Dwan Edwards

Comment: Same as above.

• RDE: Kony Ealy, Wes Horton, Frank Alexander

Comment: Curious to see what Alexander does after missing 12 games for violating the substance abuse policy in 2014. He potentially has the ability to be an every-down player, as Greg Hardy was.

• SLB: Thomas Davis, A.J. Klein

Comment: First-round draft pick Shaq Thompson is better suited to play the weak side, so Davis goes to the strong side.

• MLB: Luke Kuechly, David Mayo, Jason Trusnik

Comment: Kuechly is one of the best middle linebackers in the NFL, if not the best. Mayo was a tackling machine in college and should help on special teams. He also can play both outside linebacker spots.

• WLB: Shaq Thompson, Adarius Glanton, Ben Jacobs

Comment: Putting Thompson on the field with Davis and Kuechly just elevated this top-10 defense and the flexibility defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has.

• LCB: Josh Norman, Melvin White, Carrington Byndom

Comment: Norman is as close to a shutdown corner as Carolina has.

• RCB: Charles Tillman, Bene’ Benwikere, Teddy Williams

Comment: Signing the 34-year-old Tillman in the offseason was big in that it allows Benwikere to move back to the nickel spot where he is best.

• FS: Tre Boston, Robert Lester

Comment: Panthers were 5-1 (including two playoff games) with Boston the starter down the stretch last season.

• SS: Roman Harper, Kurt Coleman

Comment: Will be interesting to see how Harper’s role changes with the addition of Coleman and the flexibility of Thompson to play safety.

• Nickel: Bene’ Benwikere, Colin Jones

If Daryl Williams can win the job, or let me dream for a second and La'el Collins is proven to be innocent, this team looks great. The secondary is kind of week, but if we can generate a dominant pass rush like in seasons past, that should be a huge concern. In reality, as long as Cam can continue to grow and take the necessary steps forward, this team has no limits. I couldn't be more excited.

It looks nice on paper. Hopefully we come out of the gate playing strong and win those first 4 games before the bye like we're supposed to. If we can do that and finish the next 4 .500 we could be looking at a special season.
