Week 9 WIN agains the Packers - Stats & Analysis

Once again a thread to round up various statistics and interesting analysis of our 37-28 WIN against the Green Bay Packers yesterday that moves the Panthers to 8 - 0.  (Gosh it still feels SO good to type that word WIN and those numbers 8 & 0 now nearly 24 hours following kickoff.  The reality hasn't truly sunk in yet.  I'm still walking about in kind of a happy daze...)

I was thrilled to see Bill Voth recommence his "Stats & Superlatives" posts, with a new entry with all sorts of nice stats & tidbits from yesterday's game.

Here's a section of interesting info, but there's MUCH more at BBR.  Go read it all.

THE PANTHERS:

  • Sacked Packers QB Aaron Rodgers five times, his most since Minnesota got him five times on 12/30/12.
  • Scored at least 20 points for the 8th time this season. They scored 20 or more just eight times last year.
  • Are 23-2-1 when scoring at least 20 points since the start of 2013.
  • Matched the most points they've ever scored in the 2nd quarter. They also scored 24 in a win against the 49ers on 10/17/99.
  • Scored their most points (27) in the 1st half since they put up 27 in an eventual loss against the Lions on 11/20/11.
  • Have converted 11 of their 16 red zone trips into touchdowns over their last four games.
  • Allowed a touchdown in the 1st quarter for the first time this season.
  • Have allowed 54 points in the 4th quarter through eight games. They allowed just 71 points in the 4th quarter last season.

Bill Voth also postes a "Stats & Superlatives" analysis Pre-game.  You'll find that here.

http://blackandbluereview.com/stats-and-superlatives-ahead-of-pantherspackers/

It's interesting to go back and look at those stats and compare them with the final outcome.  For instance, there was this interesting comparison of 1st quarter scoring stats:

Quote

EARLY ON

  • The Panthers haven’t allowed a touchdown in the 1st quarter this year. Their average of 2.1 points allowed in the first quarter is 2nd best in the league. The Broncos haven’t allowed a single 1st-quarter point while the Packers have given up the 3rd-fewest at 2.3 per game.
  • The Packers have scored touchdowns in the 1st quarter in six of their seven games. Their average of 9.4 points in the first quarter leads the NFL. They’ve scored touchdowns on their opening drive in three of their last four games.

Who won that matchup?  Green Bay.

- Panthers gave up their first 1st Q TD of the season, so Green Bay improved to scoring 1st Q TDs in 7 of 8 games (albeit NOT on their first drive of the game this time)

However, the Panthers went on a TEAR in Quarter 2... with 24 unanswered points, nullifying Green Bay's early fast start.

As always, just goes to show that stats, while interesting, aren't always the determining factor in a game.

J Jones has just tweeted some updated J-NO stats:

In the last 4 games, QBs throwing at Josh Norman are 5-of-13 for 78 yards, 0 TDs and 4 pass breakups.

That does not include two screens behind LOS in Seattle and one by Philadelphia. All 13 of those were past LOS.

Cam continues breathing down Steve Young's neck... both for all time rushing TDs by a QB, and for games with both a rushing TD and a passing TD.

via BBR:

http://blackandbluereview.com/rapid-reactions-panthers-packers/

--QB Cam Newton rushed for his 38th career touchdown, tying him with Kordell Stewart for 2nd-most by a QB since 1970. Hall of Famer Steve Young tops that all-time list with 41.

Newton also inched closer to Young for the most games with a passing and rushing touchdown since 1970. Newton now has 29.  Young had 31. Newton also became the 3rd QB in NFL history with 15 games with two-plus passing touchdowns and at least one rushing touchdown (Young, Fran Tarkenton).

(By the way, this is cool.  I typed "Steve Young" into the Twitter search bar to try and find the latest tweet about these stats from NFL.com.  Two pictures of Cam show up at the top of the Twitter search results!!!!!!  LOL.)

PFF Game Review & Top Grades:

Great to see how well the right side of our OLine is graded.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/11/09/gb-car-grades-newton-rises-when-needed-packers-falter-on-road-again/

Carolina Panthers

– Classic Cam Newton (+0.5 overall, -1.6 in pass game, +2.0 as runner) was on display, as he alternated special plays with head-scratching misses throughout the game. His post route to Funchess was as on-target as you can get, dropping right into his hands for a 52-yard gain, while the touchdown to Brown was also great ball placement. On the other end, he also left a couple touchdowns on the table, whether overthrowing TE Greg Olsen on the seam route at the 5:54 mark of the second quarter, or overthrowing Cotchery on the out route with 4.56 to go in the third quarter. When you add in the poor decision and throw on his fourth quarter interception that let the Packers back into the game, it results in a -1.6 passing grade for the game.

– The right side of the Panthers’ offensive line did a fine job, as RG Trai Turner and RT Mike Remmers graded at +3.4 and +4.1 respectively. Turner’s effort has him tied for fourth among the league’s guards at 89.8, while for Remmers, it’s his second straight positive grade after a pair of disastrous efforts. The duo combined to surrender only two hurries on the afternoon, while grading at +5.7 in the run game.

– Linebacker Luke Kuechly continued his Pro Bowl play with a +3.4 overall grade, including a +1.8 run grade and +2.1 mark in coverage. He used his usual great instincts to beat second level blockers to the point of attack, getting in on a team-high eight tackles and four stops. In coverage, he added yet another pass defensed, his fourth on the season, good for second among inside linebackers.

Top performers:

RT Mike Remmers +4.1
LB Luke Kuechly +3.4
RG Trai Turner +3.2
TE Greg Olsen +2.8
WR Devin Funchess +1.7

Some of the stats tweets I noted and favorited yesterday or earlier today:

Charles Tillman has forced a fumble in his past five games against the #Packers. That’s incredible.

6 tackles 1 sack 1 interception 1 pass breakup @ThomasDavisSDTM was EVERYWHERE vs. Green Bay!

Second Quarter of the NFL Season Panthers 4-0 Falcons 1-3

Jonathan Jones doing some advanced math:

Panthers have played 489 minutes and 38 seconds this year and have trailed in five of eight games for a total of 91 minutes and 56 seconds

I don't know what those numbers mean or where that ranks in NFL. I just did the math and felt like sharing after my hard work #math

    • I think Ransom will be a solid player for us.  He played beside Caleb Downs, the cornerstone of the Ohio State defense last year and some have him as a top 5 pick for the 2026 draft.  He was characterized as the smart, instinctive, versatile safety.   I just don't think S will be a liability unless we have injuries.  I am very interested in seeing what they have in the three UDFA safeties; I see one making the roster. As for CB, I think they are higher on Wade-Smith than most of us are. Again, depth is a concern.  We have to hope Jackson has another solid season and Horn does not injure his leg or toe on one of the yard lines.   I am not sure I would compare it to last season's DL because this year's DL will cover a lot of deficiencies, but I know what you mean---our weak link.
    • Lol.  Now you make me defend DG. We had the best IOL in the league under DG and Oher looked solid until he got that bad concussion. DG drafted Moton and Daryl Williams as well. The OL fell apart under Hurney 2.0 and Fitterer. DG also drafted Star and Short. Sorry, but that was all in 5 drafts so let’s not make stuff up about not trying to improve hog mollies. Gettleman did a ton wrong and took the wrong guys, but he and Rivera had a deep and talented team and it got blown up really quickly. Also, I love Cam but he wasn’t the best QB in the league. He had the best year in 2015 but he wasn’t Brady. I think Dan has had a solid offseason, way better than last year but I’m not putting on rose colored glasses until we actually have a 10 win season. Again, Dave and Ron had 3 10+ wins seasons out of 5.
    • Yeah I wont often comment on a coddled generation and participation trophies but this sort of begs for it. Also how did an athlete achieve at that level without getting a thicker skin?
