On the Ledge

Interesting read. Not much of anything new, just a different take.

http://www2.journalnow.com/content/2009/sep/18/on-the-ledge-panthers-might-face-precipitous-fall-/sports/

Hope springs eternal, even with builders and banks and backs in disarray, but four straight preseason defeats and an opening-day fiasco landed on Panthers hopes like a toilet dropped from the fifth floor. Philadelphia hammered Carolina 38-10, feeding on seven turnovers overall, five by quarterback Jake Delhomme.

The stats -- 11 Delhomme turnovers in his past seven quarters -- inspired widespread panic yet told only part of the story. Carolina's veteran line didn't protect him, nor did the tailbacks. Philadelphia torched the defense, returned a punt 85 yards and flashed the instincts of a playoff contender.

Carolina didn't, which depresses the paying fans and triggers suspicions of a sub-mediocre season followed by massive overhaul. Coach John Fox and General Manager Marty Hurney look as vulnerable as Delhomme, given the labor-pool reality that quality quarterbacks are harder to find.

I don't think we can keep blaming the O-line for Jakes poor performances.. our O-line may have bad games but its nowhere near the level that Jake has been bad.. the last time I can even remember the Oline being horrid was the chicago game when they sacked him 20000 times.

if you watch the OLine during the game, or record and watch later, instead of Jake... yOu would understand who was more to blame, including the coaches...

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
