EDIT: For a 2nd in 2016 and 3rd rounder in 2017. 2nd was acquired via Staal trade. 3rd was acquired via Versteeg trade.

Not that familiar with NHL rosters but all indications are Teravainen was one of the bright young prospects for Chicago who just couldn't get on the ice with the big club (1st rounder in 2012, 21 years old) they really wanted to dump Bickell, and Ronnie Francis got a steal.

Deals like this are how a proper rebuild is done. I like it.

A move committed to winning ? What is this ?

Had to tear it down first, and as cap strapped and lacking in talent as this team was that wasn't easy to do.

Technically this isn't even a "win" move. More like an addition to the young core thanks to Francis seeing an opportunity with a Chicago team needing to cut salary.

Its a step in the right direction for sure

Do they try and sign a big FA now like Okposo ?

I'd like to see what the young guys could do together and stay flexible. Prior to blowing it up at the deadline they were hanging around the WC spots and maybe even snuck in had they made a "win now" move.

They still have plenty of picks and youth with high upside. If they make some real progress in a few years then I'd start to go after the big fish on the market to supplement the team and add depth and at that point, you're looking at a real Cup contender.

A win now move would've been pointless. The team couldn't have competed with Pittsburgh, Washington or Tampa in a series. Ron made the best move and let go of a falling star and gaining those picks as now he has turned them into a potential Top 6 player who can play with Skinner or in best case scenario Aho.

It'll be tough to get a top Free Agent to come to Raleigh but ya never know. I hope we make a run at Okposo.

Love this deal. I wouldn't be surprised if we're not done making any moves. I think if Ronnie sees a guy he likes, don't be surprised we move one of our D prospects (Pesce, Fleury) or maybe even Wiz.  As far as free agency goes, I would love to see is go after Reimer and then pick up a guy like Louie Erickson. As good as Okposo would be, I think he's going to be out of RFs price range.

Good pickup.

GM Ronnie Francis turned Eric Staal into Teuvo Teravainen (2016 2nd rounder used on TT), Aleksi Saarela (another solid finish prospect), and a 2017 2nd round draft pick. It will be interesting to see where TT slots. He was playing 3rd line center/2nd line right wing with the Hawks.

Carolina will still have to spend to get to the cap floor. As of right now, we are still $8M under the cap floor and a total of 26M under the actual cap. However, everyone knows that Karmanos has GMRF operating under an internal cap

I've seen a few line combos posted over at Hockey's Future Message Board that really interest me, this one in particular:

Skinner / Rask / FA (Okposo/Eriksson)

Nestrasil / Staal / Nordstrom

Aho / Teravainen / Lindholm

Bickell / McClement / Di Giuseppe

Outside of a 1st line right wing (Okposo/Eriksson), a 13th forward (maybe bring back Riley Nash?), and a goalie (Frederik Andersen, Marc Andre-Fleury, James Reimer, Cam Ward?) this Canes team isn't looking too bad.

Will having a competitive team ever net nightly sell outs in Raleigh ? Even after the cup year attendance was only middle of the pack ... I know Raleigh has it in them ... Or don't they .. I find it hard to believe with all the young talent if the team finally were to be contending the crowd wouldn't be better than ever before

Raleigh can and will support a winner. It's just taken so long that it will take a huge turnaround to see immediate results in attendance.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
