I've waited tables, I've worked behind the line, I've even done deliveries. A tip is something you should have to earn and the standard is 15%, although we've inflated it in recent years to 20%.

I can also tell, based on what the complaint is, whether it is the kitchen's fault or the waiter's fault. If it's the kitchen's fault, I'll ask the waiter/waitress to see if it can be fixed -- if it gets fixed, then the waitstaffer gets an even bigger tip. If it can't be fixed, then I'll either speak with the manager or just let it go. Steak comes out underdone then comes back overdone... yanno, I'll just eat the steak and not make a big fuss. Tip the waiter and go on, but probably not come back to the restaurant if it's my first or second time there. The world is full of restaurants, yanno? If it's a place where I'm a regular, I just chalk it up to a bad night for them -- probably be fine next time.

But if my waiter/waitress disappears for 30 minutes and comes back smelling like the cigarette she just hotboxed, or she's still chewing the fry that she snagged off of one of the plates (yeah, this happens, a lot) or if they roll their eyes because I ask if I could have a refill on a glass of tea -- then I am quickly being reminded that you just aren't really up to snuff at this job.

Either way, he's a rule I go by and it seems fair. A typical meal at a good restaurant should take about an hour of time give or take a few minutes. My maximum tip (unless we're a party of 6 or more) is equivalent to one hour of the pay I get. Really, it's that simple. You are employed by someone else who gets away with paying you nothing and I cannot ethically figure out why I should be giving you more than I would make in the same time.

Bartenders are a bit different, a buck a drink and generally finish off a $10 bill on the last one.

Beyond that, I am not contractually obligated to pay for your mortgage, your rent, your car payment or your coke habit. I came in for a meal, have a good time and I'll drop a $20 or so in your tip coffers if everything goes smoothly. I did not select a restaurant in an attempt to be part of your GoFundMe effort. That's your boss' job.

But bosses criminally get away with not doing their job. So we, as a civilized society, are obligated to pick each other up and help right the wrongs of the establishment.

Just because you have had previous experience in something, it doesn't make that shared experience.

I mean, this guy found DeAngelo Williams on Twitter and tweeted him. He must've known.

TBQH, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised to know that DWill travels, and eats, with heralds announcing his arrival and departure...

If what he is says is true - waiting over an hour for food only for the order to be wrong and not ever getting asked for a refill in a restaurant that has food over $100, not giving a tip seems very fair. He says he chose not to give a tip rather than call a manager. Didn't want to ruin this woman and make her lose her job, but didn't want to reward bad service.

Want a tip? Give better service.

She brought out a $128 worth of food, that's certainly worth more than 75 cents.

Jesus what an asshole

Color me surprised that resident conservative TN05 isn't in favor of paying the plebeians who only partially cater to his outrageous needs.

Yep typical TB conservatives with no empathy showing their face in this thread.

btw tips are a horrible way of pay. You are leaving peoples income up to the mood of the customer at that moment.

D-will.....maybe she just found out her mom had breast cancer or that she did.

And he said it took an hour and a half to get out and when it did come out, they didn't get it right - and didn't offer any refills.

Just saying that if I had to wait an hour and a half for food and didn't get a single refill request, I'd be pissed too. It's either you call a manager and risk firing someone, or don't leave a good tip. Or be passive-egressive and leave a bad Yelp review. Bad service doesn't warrant good tips.

So it's her fault that the chefs/restaurant couldn't get her the food in time.

edit: If the waiter doesn't offer a refill, i request one.
