Are the Panthers going to be sucessful in the cover 2?

The Question

Recommended Posts

I think its hard for anyone to be successful in the Cover 2 in this league. It has been around for too long and coaches have found ways to exploit it. This is why more and more teams are going to 3-4 and Fire Zone type blitz, its harder to game plan against. In order to make the cover 2 work you have to have an all-pro Dline like we had in 03 to constantly pressure. Otherwise they pick you apart.

So No, I do not think we will be successful in it.

Worked well enough for Kiffin in Tampa Bay, and Smith in Chicago isn't complaining about it.

Most teams that run a 4-3 have a cover 2 package that they pull out. It's effective, and it will always be effective against teams that don't have a good tight end. Even then, if the MLB is playing up (Tampa 2 variant) you can limit the other team to 3-4 yard passes, which is good enough to eventually force a punt.

Like any defense, it's all about personnel and execution. If you have both, you're going to be good no matter what package you're running. If one is missing, you're watching TV in January.

Kiffin's Defense imploded on prime time tv against us no less (and it didn't go up from there) and your using it as success story. Yeah 5 or 6 years ago it was a successful scheme. Now it is a dying (fastly) scheme that will be all but extinct within 5 years. As the great Bill Walsh once said "In Coaching you have to reinvent yourself each year."

Yeah, Meeks is garbage. He will be gone this off-season along with Fox. No sacks or pressure on Ryan, just kept picking us apart on third downs. What business do we have doing cover 2 with only ONE good D lineman?? We can't pressure the qb and we sure as hell don't blitz anymore. It's like saying, "please convert this third down on us, we will give you all the time you want because we don't want to get off the field!"

We don't have the personnel for Cover-2....in every single aspect of the word. our LBs aren't coverage LBs, none of them is, not even Thomas Davis. our DBs especially our safeties don't have the speed it requires, and Gamble while fast, for some reason just doesn't get the technique it takes to disrupt a route. Marshall is too slow to play cover 2

Kiffins Defense imploded b/c he said he was leaving.

He was/is a master and has second to Dick LeBeau only in DC's

I was just saying it was a bad example. But yes Kiffin is a good DC but he also didn't run a pure Cover 2 he put in different plays and blitz to keep the D guessing something our coaching staff doesn't do. Even so Kiffin was using the cover 2 less and less.

I'm sorry but you really don't know what you are talking about.

Cover 2 was his base defense, of course he didn't run it solely.

Just like it is our base D right now and we change up from play to play.

Did you read my last sentence I was saying he was using less and less of it. And he ran a the Tampa 2 to begin with. Although they are in essence the same two deep safeties they are very different otherwise. Trying to compare the Cover 2 crap that Fox's runs to anything that came from Kiffin is mute to begin with.

    • Btw... only Mitch fugging Marner has a better +/- than Key 🔑!!! And, Mitchy needed 5 more games and almost 100 more shifts to get there.
    • I was honestly flabbergasted to see Rod send out Stanky and the boys to to matchup against their top line to start the game. The reason that line has been so effective is because they've been matched mostly against 2nd and 3rd lines all year. You've got last change. Use it to your advantage.
    • Nobody played well on defense last night. But, the vitriol towards Chatfield (and to a lesser extent, K'andre) is bigly misplaced. People (not just you) just refuse to accept how bad Slavin has been this season. And, I get it. Canes fans (and informed analysts) have spent nearly a decade trying to explain to casuals just how good Jaccccob is at hockey. 4Nations happened and the hockey watching public started to listen. National media even started floating the idea of creating a new award in his honor. Then this season, he gets hurt. It happens. NBD. But, when he finally came back, it wasn't the same. He'll get back to his old self in no time. Probably just some rust, it'll be fine. Only, it wasnt rust, and he's not fine. He's bad right now. It wasnt just last night. Although, that was absolutely the worst game of his NHL career. Slavin (-4) currently has the 3rd worst +/- of anyone left in the playoffs. We've  been begging the world to recognize Jaccob Slavin's greatness. And, by the time we finally got people to listen, he shits the bed! I blame Kash!
