Franchising Greg Hardy shows he valued him whether it was for one year or not. Why wouldn't a guy who values the Dline keep a 15 sack all pro player for another year?

Was Star/Short not the right picks? I remember Frank Kearse, Andre Neblett, Tank Tyler, Fua, McClain,.etc. He solidified the DT position in one draft. He had his choice of players in the Draft he decided Butler's upside was higher than the DE's on the board. The giants selected JPP when they had Osi/Tuck and by year 2 he was their best defensive player. Give Butler a chance to grow.

Adding more depth at DT is a problem?

Keeping Charles Johnson was a point I made because once again it shows that he values the Dline not just the DT's. He could have let him go this off season but opted to bring him back after a solid run in the playoffs. Frank Alexander had talent and Gettleman stuck with him until the reward no longer outweighed the risk.

What quality DE's (Draft able or Free Agent) could he had realistic brought in? Who would have started over CJ, Hardy or Kony in Gettleman's 4 years here?

Gettleman did not keep CJ here, he could have went elsewhere and made more money. He WANTED to come back here for a championship run.  Thats been well  known. Never said star and short were bad picks just stating the comparison to the DT and DE position. Also never said Butler is a bad player, I actually think he is gonna be good but he was still drafted at a position strength. Hardy was arguably the best DE in the league at the time when he was do a new contract but he wanted to much from gettleman so no deal was gonna get done, this was before the DV case so obviously he didn't value him that much. Lastly, of course gettleman values the d line as whole over anything. But the discussion was the value comparison of DT and DE positions he has aseessed specifically.

Gettleman picks the players and handles the money he did keep him here.

Then what are we talking about? If Short/Star were the right picks why complain about using high drafts picks on them.

He valued him enough to allocate $15M in valuable cap space on him.

If the panthers draft board has a DT ranked higher than a DE doesn't it make sense to pick the DT? after all the scouting department watches hours and hours of tape Why pick a player you don't believe in just to fill a need that's how you get Clausen's and McFua's.
