2017-2018 Carolina Hurricanes Season

I figured I'd make a thread for the upcoming season since there is usually not enough activity to have a thread for each individual game.

Nonetheless, the Hurricanes kicked off the 2017-2018 NHL season with a preseason win over the Buffalo Sabres last night. Derek Ryan had 2 goals (including the game winner) and 1 assist, Josh Jooris added a goal, and Jeff Skinner, Haydn Fleury, and Trevor Van Riemsdyk each added an assist.

The Canes are icing a young lineup tonight against the Tamp Bay Lightning in their second preseason game and Justin Williams makes his return.

Teravainen/ Rask/ Williams

Nordstrom/ Kruger/ McGinn

Foegel/ Kuokkanen/ Gauthier

Bishop/ Poturalski/ Jooris

Dahlbeck/McKeown

Carrick/Kichton

Samuelsson/Chelios

Nedeljkovic

Booth

The Canes training camp roster currently sits at 54 players with Stelio Mattheos, Morgan Geekie, Hudson Elynuik, Noah Carroll, and Brendan De Jong having been returned to juniors. A lot of guys get to prove their case for being the extra on the Canes roster going into October this pre-season. Nobody is certain because Charlotte is likely going to want to ice their best possible lineup to contend for the Calder Cup. If the young talent can perform we may have a chance to keep guys fresh and not have to worry as much about injuries as we have in the past. I'm particularly interested to see how the bottom 6 do tonight.

The Canes snagged another preseason victory with a 2-1 win over the Lightning tonight.

Justin Williams scored on the power play in his first game back with the Canes and Teravainen also added a power play goal as well as an assist; Trevor Carrick also picked up two assists and Rask had one assist.

Both Nedeljkovic and Booth played well as only one goal was allowed (Nedeljkovic) on 22 shots.

The refs seem to be trying to clean the game up this year as 18 total penalties were called (36 pim), Carolina had 10 of them.

I'll also mention the Canes returned goalie, Jeremy Helvig back to juniors. The roster currently stands at 53.

Canes downed the Caps last night 4-1 to go to 3-1 on the preseason.

Goals went to Justin Williams, Trevor Carrick, Julian Gauthier, and Justin Faulk; assists went to Jordan Staal, Justin Faulk, Valentin Zykov (2), Marcus Kruger, Trevor Carrick, and Teuvo Teravainen.

Today, the Canes assigned Patrick Brown, Andrew Miller, Julien Gauthier, Brenden Kichton, Roland McKeown, Dennis Robertson, and Philip Samuelsson to Charlotte. The roster stands at 33 with 10 cuts remaining.

Jeremy Smith, Jake Chelios, Aleksi Saarela, Jake Bean, Nicolas Roy, Janne Kuokkanen, Lucas Wallmark, and Valentin Zykov are expected to be returned to Charlotte at some points.

While Haydn Fleury, Klas Dahlbeck, Trevor Carrick, Josh Jooris, Brock McGinn, Phil Di Giuseppe, and Martin Necas are all fighting for roster spots.

With the Panthers struggling, it's time for everyone to get on the Canes bandwagon.

Canes have whittled down the roster again. Roy, Saarela, and Zykov are on their way to Charlotte; Carrick, Chelios, and Smith will be joining them pending waivers.

Hopefully Carrick makes it through.

The Canes roster sits at 27 with...

Teravainen - Staal - Williams

Aho - Rask - Lindholm

Skinner - Ryan - ?

Nordstrom - Kruger - McGinn

Jooris

Slavin - Faulk

Hanifin - Pesce

Fleury - Van Riemsdyk

Darling

Ward

Injured: Stempniak

I see 2 spots remaining for

Dahlbeck, Bean Di Guiseppe, Necas, Kuokkanen, Wallmark.

Based of performances I can see Dahlbeck as the 7th, PDG and Wallmark headed to Charlotte, and Necas or Kuoakkanen slotting in as the 3RW.

Tonight's the dress rehearsal before the real thing.

Canes going with:

Aho - Staal - Lindholm

Kuokkanen - Rask - Williams

Skinner - Ryan - Necas

Nordstrom - Kruger - McGinn

Slavin - Faulk

Hanifin - Pesce

Fleury - Van Riemsdy

Darling

Ward

Injured: Teravainen, Stempniak

Scratched: Jooris, Di Giuseppe, Wallmark, Dahlbeck

Looks like Kouk and Necas are going to battle it out for Stempniak's spot until he returns from injury; Teravainen is expected to be ready for the season opener.

I expect Jooris to be the healthy extra as Wallmark is too good/young to sit in the press box every night and PDG just really hasn't had a great camp.

    • Right, so basically what I said in my first post about this last night. Tepper needs to use that big wallet of his in one of the few ways it can be used in the NFL given the cap.   Give Scourton a bigger signing bonus but not a fully guaranteed deal. Everyone wins in that scenario as if Scourton is smart and hires good money people, he'll take that bigger signing bonus and use it to make more money in the end over the next 4 years than if he just had his fully guaranteed deal and a smaller signing bonus.
    • It is all confusing and layered. SB is the cash you get very soon within weeks or in simple terms, its what you get to sign the paper work. Players and agents can agree on contract but what to "wait" to sign......teams don't like that cause you can "Carlos Boozer" yourself. In order to get that ink dry, while keeping the contract the same, portion it as a bonus to "sign" and get the funds with ________ .   * But Ive seen worded contracts that split the SB or a 20% to a later date. The beans counters can fill in the details about why certain dates are better and save the team money.. Theres tricks to the trade and accounting is full of them.    Ugh another big layer, is SB can be used to manipulate cap and players. Ill try to give a example that makes enough sense. Believe it or not having a owner like Tepper is a cheat code for this. He has cash in hand, where as Mark Davis had problem making pay roll and had to move the team to Vegas....... Tepper can give you 100,000,000 SB right now and the team can spread out the cap hit. Another owner doesn't have or want to give the player 100,000,000 in cash, but offered the same guaranteed contract in roster bonuses fully guaranteed over the next few years........ Which one do you want??? Everyone wants the money now, not before another inflation waves hits in 2 years. So it does 'pay" to have a owner like tepper that's able to have real cash on hand, while it also works GREAT for cap help. Heres a good video, if you can stand coked up pat and mask look-a-like AJ
