Panthers Week 4 WIN vs. Patriots and 2017 Quarter 1 Stats Review

Hey all,

I'm working on gamebook data entry tonight, and playing around with some of the stats from yesterdays Panthers win vs the Patriots, as well as a look at trends for the 1st quarter of the season, including noting some comparisons to how the Quarter 1 stats compare to the 2016 season.

Forgive me, time & energy is short to write a coherent analysis tonight.  I'm just going to paste tweets I've posted here in the comments below for tonight.  I hope to write up something more polished regarding the 1st quarter of the season - the positives & negatives - sometime mid-week.

ok, I'm pretty sure that's all I've got tonight.  I'm tired (nearing 11 pm here...) and so will come back to this tomorrow.  There's always a slim chance some other FASCINATING stat will catch my eye, wake me up and cause me to send out a flurry of more tweets / post a bunch more here tonight..., but not too likely...

Oops, just realized one of my tweets is missing.  A pretty key stat comparison:  Field Goal percentage!  One of the big stories of 2017 vs 2016.  It's pretty interesting.  10 FG attempts in both 2016 and 2017 weeks 1-4.  Opportunity to kick final second game winners in critical games both years.  We all know how the story went.

Gano was at only 80% this time last year, vs 100% right now.  (2nd best in the league based on attempts & % - only 1 other kicker has double digit attempts and is 100% on FGs.

Big props to Gano for making the clutch kick yesterday!

YUP!  I found a fascinating stat that's keeping me number crunching close to midnight.  I compared Red Zone efficiency for weeks 1-4 of 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Could you match these figures to their respective years?

9/12 = 75%

7/14 = 50%

5/13 = 38%

I imagine we'd all get the 38% right as we've been bemoaning it here all season.  That's 2017.  But we're 3-1.

But wow, I'd forgotten we were 75% in Red Zone touchdowns in the 1st four games of 2016.  And yet we were 1-3.

And with a mediocre 50% conversion rate in 2015 we were 4-0.

Interesting that in all 3 seasons our number of trips to the Red Zone in weeks 1 - 4 were fairly comparable.  13 in 2017; 14 in 2015; 12 in 2016.

Just goes to show that you can't isolate stats without the bigger picture!

For the record we ended the 2015 season with a 68% Red Zone rate

For the entire 2016 season the Panthers Red Zone rate was 59%

Ok.  I'm really surprised there are no comments....

Let me know what stats you want to see.

Did the Red Zone stats surprise people?  I really didn't remember that we were hot in the red zone early last season... It's very weird to me that one season we were at 75% red zone efficiency and were 1-3 W-L and next season we're at 38% red zone efficiency and 3-1.  I guess you'd have to attribute the W-L difference to our defense, since surely our defense really won us the games in in weeks 1& 2.

Great stuff as always KB!! I was wondering about red zone as well. I think special teams a big reason. Mike Lombardi talked about that last week and how many hidden yards are there. Actually I think he was talking about how to beat the Patriots. Starting field position might be an underrated factor. The penalties is a good point too. Can that be attributed to wilks?

It's just now 8 am on the east coast...give it time. ;)

LOL, yeah, I know.  I just thought there would be some last night since I posted the thread around 7 or 8 p.m. Eastern...  It had already scrolled down to the middle of page 2 overnight, which is one of the reason for my "surprised there were no comments" comment - it was a way of bumping the thread back up on to page 1 :shades:

    • did a great job getting us out of cap hell. also did nothing to make the team better once we had a roster good enough to compete for a super bowl for a hawwwg mawlie enthusiast using first round picks on shaq and vernon butler which were luxury picks while strutting out the likes of nate chandler, byron bell, matt kalil, mike remmers to protect your franchise QB was malpractice. and then of course the norman fiasco and drafting kelvin benjamin over davante adams, jarvis landry and allen robinson and doubling down on devin funchess the next year. for a guy that "came from scouting" it was crazy how he drafted 2 tall unpolished receivers simply because Cam "threw high" I remember him and Rivera thinking Byron Bell would be a better left tackle than right tackle because he was left handed lol
    • Beane took over in 2018 after Josh Allen was drafted. He's drafted 2 Pro Bowlers his entire tenure. James Cook and Dawson Knox The Bills had a generational QB fall into their lap and have wasted his prime much like we did with Cam. Alot of parallels and it's even funnier when they've had so many of our former players and built their front office around our old employees
