Fox expects to be fired

Coach John Fox has told friends and some associates he expects to be fired once the season ends. It's not that Foxy is doing a bad coaching job; it's just that the Panthers are 0-3, and they don't appear capable of catching New Orleans and Atlanta in the South.

But he's being blamed for sticking with Jake Delhomme and Julius Peppers, two high-priced stars, who aren't producing right now. If Bill Cowher is going to leave CBS, it would make sense that his former Pittsburgh boss, Dan Rooney, would try to persuade him to go to Carolina. Rooney and Panthers owner Jerry Richardson are the best of friends. Remember, Rooney accepted a draft-choice penalty (tampering charge) for allowing his then-assistant coach Dom Capers to become Carolina's first head coach.

If Fox is hanging out with you and you say, "Hey, if you guys continue playing like this do you think you'll be fired?" Well I'm sure he would either not say anything or respond in the affirmative. If he does say yes, you can just assume the Panthers will continue playing like this and tell everyone he expects to be fired. If he says it while you're out golfing in a foursome, then you get to say he told it to friends and associates. Then you have a great story people will want to read, with only the slimmest of facts to tie it to. That's how professional journalism works now.

Until I see an interview with Fox where he specifically says such a thing, or hear what he says first-hand from someone who's talked to him, then I'm taking it with a grain of salt. This whole "friends and some associates" could mean just about anything, and therefore it means nothing.

you might be right about the lack of source, but the damage is done now. Fox WILL be asked about this today by the observer in the post game i am sure of it.

Wait and see.

    • I watch a ton of NFL because the product on the field is still the best on the planet. But, that will only get you so far. US sports fans are an aging crowd so there will be a dramatic drop when the Boomers die off and the GenXers do, as well.  The Millennials will probably be the last major generation that watches sports in high numbers.
    • The Bryce stanning is relentless.    Cam’s team won two games the previous season and legit was picking 1st. Bryce’s team won 7 games the previous season and was actually in playoff contention. And legit earned the 9th overall pick.  If anything made that team worse in 2023 than in 2022 it was Bryce. Come on. And missing DJ, I’ll concede that.
    • I see the logic in what you're saying, but I'd also say there were games with a bit more talent on the roster that some of the L's are actually W's.  AZ - We don't get off to a crappy start and if this game is later in the season when Bryce is a bit more comfortable, I think we beat the Cards NO - At least one of, if not both of these games would've gone our way SF - Perfect opportunity to snag a win on the road that Purdy handed to us, but we couldn't do anything offensively TB - Final game was winnable in Tampa  All this to say, I think 8 wins is about where we were at in 2025 if you take the games we barely won and combined them against the games that we barely lost.  Add 5-6 new pieces in FA and the draft. We went head to head and almost beat the Rams in a meaningful playoff game that gave a lot of the youth that experience to take into 2026 and beyond, and I do think 10-11 wins is achievable next year.  Not guaranteed, but much the way folks thought we could get to 8 or 9 wins this year as the ceiling, I think 10-11 is the new ceiling for next year.
