Mort Mentions Pep as Deadline Looms

Mort was on one of the EPSN shows this morning, and I hadn't seen it posted here yet... May have been on Mike&Mike. They asked him about players that may be on the block, he said Pep was a guy that may get some offers, but he didn't expect many offers for him as his cap figure is 16 Mil and he has underperformed. He may have said there were offers before, but if they didn't happen then, the gist was that it isn't going to happen now for him b/c of his salary and performance... But, teams will give their best shot for players compared to previous offers b/c of the deadline.

He also went on to mention Shawne Merriman. Basically the same situation as Pep, said he is due a new contract and has underperformed, so it's not an attractive situation for teams. BUT, he said that teams had already called about Merriman to gauge what the Chargers were looking for, but hadn't made offers. He said he expects those same teams to be contacted by the Chargers with the Chargers making a proposal.

I expected the situation with Pep. But, it would be nice to see us make a "Chris Harris Trade" at the deadline. I don't think Fox/Hurney would deal anymore 1st day picks, but then again, they may be feeling the heat. I wouldn't mind grabbing Merriman if the price was right either.

Merriman + Beason + Davis??? Wow.

But, I would really like to tighten up the DT position though.

I was under the impression that once a team tags a player and the season starts that team cannot trade that player until next year. Can someone clarify?

he can be traded, just not extended. he has to become a free agent or get Franchised again after this season.

He could be a DE in a 4-3, but he's just as good of a fit at LB in a 4-3. Hurrr hurrr

i agree a position he has never played in the NFL

what was I thinking

He said only team that they had heard was even interested in Pep was New England again.Said they needed a good pass rusher on the d-line.So I called the numbers I looked up on the internet for the patriots, called and the girl said I couldn't speak directly to GM,so I left a message for him.If you want a great pass rusher off the Panthers, trade for Hollis Thomas. If you want Pep,make sure you get Beason too, cause he is the only one who can make him play at a high level. If you can't make a deal with Beason in it,Hollis is your man

You weren't.

He's a hybrid player, I'm sure 3-4 LBs never have to drop into coverage...

If you play know nothing GM, he can play LB in a 4-3.

Slow? You mean like Jon Beason's 4.6 40 yard dash?

Gee, I wonder if that's measured in the same world as Shawne Merriman's 4.6 40 yard dash?

I mean, no one is as fast as Na'il Diggs... Merriman can't hold a candle to him.

Thanks. Go play your Madden Franchise.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
