I'm actually a fan of hiring guys who have been promoted then demoted.

On the one hand, it shows that it's some point they were good enough at what they do to merit promotion.

On the other, since those promotions didn't work out, many decide to stick with what they do best.

He trashed Peppers hard for months on the radio. Here is a huddle post about it:

You think Peppers wants to play for that guy?

Only thing I can think of is Hoke was doing good things at San Diego State while Rivera was coaching with the Chargers. Maybe Rivera noticed or they crossed paths somewhere.

Hoke said Rivera came to speak at a seminar San Diego State was doing for high school football players.

One on One with Brady Hoke

Of all things...

Hoke mentions having met Eric Washington as well but doesn't elaborate.

The brother he mentions (Jon Hoke) is the DB coach for the Bucs.  I've heard of him but didn't put the two together.

Most people seem skeptical of this hire but if there is one thing Hoke can do, it's identify defensive line talent.

Mike Martin, Frank Clark, Willie Henry, Taco Charlton, Chris Wormley, and Ryan Glasgow were all coached by Hoke or brought to UM by Hoke.

That's six defensive linemen drafted in the past seven years (yes, Hoke's impact extends beyond the 2014 season because he coached some of these guys as freshman and sophomore's or he recruited them to UM).
