I think I disagree.

GoT became a cultural phenomenon. It is firmly entrenched in our society, moreso than fantasy front-runners like Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, as the pinnacle of the genre. You see references to it everywhere now, and in other forms of media/shows even.

Not only that, but I would argue that the show has definitely boosted the interest/sales of the books that were their predecessor.

I can agree that they can totally botch the ending and turn people off. But, I think when you look at the bigger picture, GoT the show has actually opened a lot of doors for other works. Networks (including HBO) are already trying to find their next Fantasy super series.

What did The Wire, The Sopranos, Lost, or any other contender for the crown open up for anyone else? The only one I think that could compare might be something like Star Trek.

The Wire, Deadwood, The Sopranos lead the way for GoT.

Wheel of Time is coming up which is like the Star Wars vs. Star Trek of that age of fantasy writing.

Wheel of Time kicks GoT ass when it comes to writing style and the book.

But right now it looks like it’s gonna get fugged cause of the network pushing it.

Despite The Wire's pragmatic and novelesque approach to storytelling I still think if it aired today with proper marketing it would be huge and would win multiple Emmys. It is simply, the goat.

One scene simply. Anyone who can write an entire scene only using the word fug. And make it work on every level. Wins.

If The Wire was premiering now. Holy poo,

I think GoT is a great show. Not the GOAT but the first 5 seasons were definitely the show's peak. Now it's just the payoff and fan service. But it's still highly entertaining TV that is better than most.

Brilliant scene. Have you read Jonathan Abram's book on The Wire? Incredible.

No, but I’ll have to. The thing The Wire had that nothing else in drama TV did was it was based on a real thing, in a real place with real characters.

That was actually the tag line for the latest Orville last night.

NOPE.

WoT got that name because of all the time you'll waste reading it!

(j/k I couldn't comment on it because I've never tried to read them or Discworld because it seems stupid to write such a long series, much more read one.)

There were no big Fantasy TV shows before Game of Thrones.

After, there will be:

The Witcher, Wheel of Time, the Tolkien series, Kingkiller Chronicle, etc. etc. etc.

GoT has been movie quality imagery with award winning novel writing. Sure there are some flaws, but they are few and far between.

LOL your opinions are terrible.

If anything about GRRMs books are terrible, it is the fact that he writes them too slowly now.

GoT has arguably converted mass amounts of people who were not true fantasy fans. Given the medium in which to do so.

Im just on the other side. TWD, GoT, BB, Lost. Are just shock value writing(with a big budget) in my opinion. They have their place

I prefer shows with a little bit more sophistication to their writing.

You'll be amazed reading the behind the scenes. Omar's inspiration was Butchie's bodyguard and then Omar's bodyguard in prison. That happens a lot. Detective Norris was the damn Police Commissioner for Baltimore during the first 2 seasons of filming. I love how Simon wrote in lines for Norris taking shots at Baltimore's Police Department. fuging brilliant.

Here's how great The Wire was...

Despite multiple attempts, I've never made it out of the first season without falling asleep at multiple points. I gave up.

That’s my point. Because season 1 is all exposition. And it only goes up hill from there until the climax.

GoT style is an awesome first season that goes neutral or down hill from the first season.

It's a novel. It's not until you've completed it that you can appreciate it. I still go back and watch it every few months from a different character's perspective and it's amazing. The rewatchability is unparalleled. If you want excitement and action you won't find it there. The Wire is about the characters and seeing things from different perspectives. It's art not cheap thrills.

WoT gets long and follows the same structure but if you gut all the BS filler poo out the concept and characters are impeccable. GoT just kills them off whenever the write got bored.
