So here's Q1 and the answer:

Q1. How many players on the #Panthers current roster* started all 16 regular season games in 2018?

-----------------

The correct answer is 8 if counting only current 2019 roster and starters (offense/defense).

Offense:  CMC, Moton, Van Roten

Defense:  Luke, Addison, Bradberry, Jackson, Poe.

[Kalil and Adams also started all 16 games, but are no longer on the roster]

[Among the specialists, Palardy & Jansen played in all 16 games, but Gano DID NOT.  He was injured late in the season, and only played in 12.]

Well, without looking I’ll start with STs and say Gano, Palardy and Jansen but ignore if they aren’t considered starters. I don’t think there’s a lot, especially on offense.

McCaffery, Moton, R. Kalil (not sure about him) and Turner on O. Kuechly, Thompson, Peppers, Short, Poe, Bradberry and Jackson on D. I think Addison and Adams missed a game but I think the rest started all year.

Yes on CMC, Moton,  No on Turner.  He started only 13.  Greg Van Roten was the other offensive guy to start all 16.  In fact Van Roten was the only player on the team to play every snap.

On Defense:  Kuechly, Poe, Bradberry & Jackson are correct.  You missed Addison.

Thompson was injured late in the season, only started 10 (played in 13).  KK only started 14.

So why did I pick this quesion.  Is there any significance to this data?

As I worked on compiling a detailed spreadsheet about the  Panthers roster yesterday, I noticied that a lot of key players (starters / important role players) are coming back from injury. Cam, Greg, Paradis, D Williams, T Smith, Cockrell, Shaq, Trai Turner, Gano, Norris.

That seemed a high number of injuries to me though obviously some players (Cam!) are much more important / irreplacable than others. Still it got me interested in whether Panthers were more or less injury plagued than normal and compared to the league in 2018.

So, I did some research.

VERY SURPRISINGLY (to me) Panthers had a substantially higher number of 16 game starters in 2018 than the rest of the league. Counting offense/defense players  active in 2018, CAR had 10 players start all 16 games in 2018.

CMC, Moton, GVR, R Kalil on offense

Luke, Addison, Bradberry, Jackson, Poe, Adams on defense.

10 players with 16 reg season starts.

  • The league average in 2018 was 7.2 players starting 16 games per team.
  • CAR was tied for 2nd (w/ CHI). Only Rams had more 16 game starters (15!)

Really surprising that CAR was so high up the list, since it seemed an injury bitten season. I guess it matters WHAT positions injuries occur at. When your QB and O line are injured, it's difficult to win....

But I decided to take it a bit further.

Is there any correlation between number of 16 game starters and team success?

Based on 2018 data, it seems there may be.

50% of teams with 8+ 16-game starters made the playoffs, while only 17% of teams with <6 16-game starters did:

Anyway, it's only 1 season of data, and WAY too small a sample size to draw meaningful conclusions, but I thought it interesting to see a possible link between consistency / durability of a team's starters and team success.

Questions? Thoughts? Give me a shout!

Interesting stuff, for sure. I test that data out across the past 10 seasons and see if there is a pretty strong correlation. Also, did you eliminate instances of players simply losing their jobs rather than injuries? That could definitely skew the data a little bit. I guess another bit would be how many starters/projected starters were lost before the season started? That might be difficult to account for in all instances.

Either way, appreciate the breakdown. Definitely a welcome respite from the dead period garbage that has been floating around here.

Yeah, there are multiple reasons why a guy might not start all 16 games.

  • Injury, obviously,
  • Being released.
  • A playoff team sitting its starters late in the season
  • A rebuilding team wanting to try new / young guys
  • Disciplinary actions (suspensions)
  • Coaching philosophies

I may at least try to go back and look at Panthers data for the past 8-10 seasons for which I could put data in some context.

Trying to look at data for the whole league was actually a bit challenging even for 2018.  I didn't find a way to do a simple query in PFR and ended up doing team by team queries...

My guess is that there will continue to be some correlation between staring consistency and success, but some teams with good depth / good coaching (eg. 2017 Eagles) can overcome major injuries.  While other teams (2018 Panthers) struggle when they lose key starters.

It would be challenging to crunch all that data, for sure. Especially going back that far in time. I guess really the easiest question to answer is about continuity and it's impact on playoff success. A lot of those other factors are going to be difficult to isolate to know what their real impact is.

It is nice to look at some hard data, regardless.

I know one thing in regards to injuries, without needing to see any data at all. We are 100% fuged if Cam goes down.

Damn I thought DJax missed a start with an ankle?  Oh well I had all the others.

I think he started against the Seahawks but was injured on the 1st or second play of the game and missed the rest of it.  He got the start in the stats!
