Film Room: 49ers defense

I’ve been curious about this 49ers defense for several weeks now. This week was my first opportunity to really sit down and digest what makes them special. In a world of analytics and numbers, it always comes back to fundamentals and effort. The 49ers have a well-coached, high-energy defense.

There’s a lot to unpack, so we focused on third down. And some fourth downs, as well. This is how they were able to hold the defending NFC champs ZERO conversions on those downs.

Jimmie Ward has always been excellent when he's on the field. Its the reason he was resigned in the offseason and why the D has looked even better the past three games (he was out weeks 1-3).

The problem with Jimmie is that he can't stay on the field, or at least has been unable to up to this point in his career. Just this year, he broke his collarbone in OTAs, then finally got back and promptly badly injured his finger and had to have surgery.

If there’s any chance to move that ball tomorrow, this is how you’re going to do it. I mean, Kyle can come out and surprise the world. But you have to be able to establish the run on the road. And it’s not impossible against this defense.

This was always their best chance. And it worked. Especially when they zone schemed. It’s disappointing the defense let it get out of hand so early, because they could’ve run for 200 yards had the defense held their own.
