A Path to Trevor or Fields---without "Tanking"

There’s also a reason why some teams in great QB drafts go from mediocre to playoff contenders every year. Tampa got one top shot and the QBs were Winston and Mariota. Tennessee at least got to the playoffs multiple times. 2021 is not Winston and Mariota. I wouldn’t be recommending tanking if I didn’t feel that the 2021 QB class would be strong, even past Lawrence and Fields.

Also, I hate the Browns example. Their drafts before the last few were legitimately awful. You almost had to try to find bad players in some of the drafts. They were special in finding busts.

But we honestly won't know if this is a great QB draft or a bad one until after the fact. Certainly from year to year the opinions are on which QB drafts are good or bad but the accuracy of those prognostications varies quite a bit. Right now Lawrence and Fields look all world, but we've also seen those young QB's all of a sudden lose some luster as time goes on. I THINK they are both excellent prospects but the more tape you put out there and don't improve, people start seeing the warts.

We will see what happens.

So many posts about not tanking are around what if situations. Yes, everything could go wrong and Cam could be the league MVP for the next 5 years. You can only go based on what you know. There’s no guarantees and no time travel.

The 2021 class isn’t just those two. That said Fields and Lawrence have been highly touted since HS and they haven’t disappointed. They were two of the three best college QBs and Burrow was the other but Burrow is 3 years older. He’d be going into his 3rd year in the NFL if he came out after his junior year.

It’s not a Blake Bortles or Jamarcus year. Lawrence and Fields will come in as good a prospect as you can in many years. Could they falter, sure. Could they become Peyton and Rodgers? Sure. Everyone wants to see the downside. What if we drafted Peyton Manning as a rookie? Would you be disappointed? Maybe, maybe not but one of the best chances of that in many years. Again, I only want to tank because I think there’s a good chance and I’m willing to suck and hope for a SB.

Also, I’ve watched Lawrence way more and lst year was a great showcase of learning. Unbelievable freshman year as an 18/19 year old. Started off rough, but he was 19 and people just assumed he’s done learning because of the NC. After the rough start 23 TDs and 0 INTs in 7 games including OSU. He had a rough game against a great LSU team as did the whole team. We’ll see if he improves but again he’s 20. I liked seeing the improvement this year.

Lawrence checks a lot of boxes for me. He has elite ball placement, which stands out a lot in college where you don't see that often. I'd be excited to land him but we will see if we can suck hard enough to be #1 overall. There is going to be some very stiff competition.

There will be. I’d put my money on Grier and if the OL is still a sieve, oh geez. Starting Grier is akin to losing your starter and top backup for the year. I know the hate for Allen was large but week 17 showed how far ahead of Grier he was. Not resigning Allen and going with Grier would tell me a lot about the tank or would worry me about the new staff if they have confidence in him.
