Dragon Age: Origins

Picked it up yesterday. Did the human noble origin (beginning) as a rogue. The story is just starting to open up now. The combat is awesome, but it takes a while to get your party the way you want. Obviously the tactical combat takes new life with a decent group.

I might have mentioned picking this up for 360 on the other thread, but I switched my order to PC at the last minute. This is definitely the way to go if you have a decent computer and won't miss your TV/couch combo. I say that because...

-The graphics are not that impressive to begin with because it was in development for so long. You should also expect that trade off because of the size and style of the game. Playing the PC game on medium settings is pretty much the same as consoles from what I can tell, so don't be scared off by recommended specs.

-The PC version is more tactical because it has more enemies on the screen at a time. For console, they balanced it out by making the smaller amount of mobs stronger. They also come in waves. You may actually prefer the console's funneled action though.

-The PC version uses a toolslot bar that you can adjust like your typical MMO UI. On console, you use 3 skills mapped to the 3 face buttons. You toggle them with other buttons to bring up a new set of three. It seems to work well, but this is what made me switch. I don't want to have to toggle characters and then toggle skills and open radial menus. I'd rather just click their icon and click the spell.

-PC version gets the toolset. There is going to be tons of user created content created with the same tools as the devs. They are trying to work out a deal to get some of the content to consoles, but it's not done.

Pretty sweet game. I don't think I could manage to play it on a console though. I started off playing a warrior but restarted as a mage once I learned more, a mage is much more interesting imo.

Right now I got a good group going - warrior(focused on threat/taunt and shield), rogue(archery/poisons), dmg mage(me) and healing mage(Wynn I think?).

Sounds good to me. Haven't come across Wynne yet. I gave Morrigan (shape-shifter) a basic heal and I can craft health potions in the meantime. I plan to give this game a couple play-throughs and Mage will likely be second.

Speaking of different characters, I like Sten, but I'm probably going to drop him soon. I was hoping for more from the sour-puss. Alistair has turned out alright, I had planned on swapping him out as well. Looking forward to Oghren or Shale stepping in.

spoiler: Wynne is in the mage tower: the tower is taken over by abominations, you have to go through a lot of crap, I'm still going through it atm. Alistair is my warrior and Leliana is the rogue(bard). I chose not to use Morrigan because she'll generally disagree with the other 2. I think the group I have now will all agree with 'good' decisions. If you want a evil type character then Morrigan would fit right in.

I used Sten for a short bit but he seems hard to please and dies pretty quick. He probably gets better at higher levels but Alistair seems to do the warrior role well by himself.

A question for those of you who have this: Is it free roaming (Like Elder Scrolls) or are you taking predefined paths?

It's very different from ES. You have general skills that are universal(combat training, herbalism, traps, etc) but your talents are class specific. You have 3 classes(warrior, mage, rogue) with specific specializations for each.

It's not an open world like Oblivion. You travel between different areas and go through a defined path with each region(at least at first, I'm far from being through everything).

    • Interestingly I think we have kind of of gone through this as an organization. Richardson implemented an FO driven tank. Bad roster, no cash spent, coach uninterested. It may have been for different reasons but I think the results were the same. A team that wasn't going to win many if any games. We ended up with the #1 pick. Cam Newton came in and changed the franchise. It worked, but Cam himself pointed to the losing culture in the locker room needing to be changed. It probably took about 2-3 years for that to happen. Tank worked pretty damn well for us. Cam is one of one. Not another like him, everyone can't deliver on his draft status AND change a culture basically on his own.  So as an exercise here are the last 30 #1 picks. If you tanked and got to pick #1 how many of these guys do you think were worth it? Not just good players, but franchise changers. Guys who will take your culture and shift it so the tank was actually worth it. I would say maybe 9 or 10 guys would be worth a tank, pending the last 5 picks?    2025: Cam Ward (Miami (FL)) - Tennessee Titans 2024: Caleb Williams (USC) – Chicago Bears 2023: Bryce Young (Alabama) – Carolina Panthers 2022: Travon Walker (Georgia) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2021: Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2020: Joe Burrow (LSU) – Cincinnati Bengals 2019: Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) – Arizona Cardinals 2018: Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) – Cleveland Browns 2017: Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) – Cleveland Browns 2016: Jared Goff (California) – Los Angeles Rams 2015: Jameis Winston (Florida State) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014: Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) – Houston Texans 2013: Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) – Kansas City Chiefs 2012: Andrew Luck (Stanford) – Indianapolis Colts 2011: Cam Newton (Auburn) – Carolina Panthers 2010: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) – St. Louis Rams 2009: Matthew Stafford (Georgia) – Detroit Lions 2008: Jake Long (Michigan) – Miami Dolphins 2007: JaMarcus Russell (LSU) – Oakland Raiders 2006: Mario Williams (North Carolina State) – Houston Texans 2005: Alex Smith (Utah) – San Francisco 49ers 2004: Eli Manning (Mississippi) – San Diego Chargers 2003: Carson Palmer (USC) – Cincinnati Bengals 2002: David Carr (Fresno State) – Houston Texans 2001: Michael Vick (Virginia Tech) – Atlanta Falcons 2000: Courtney Brown (Penn State) – Cleveland Browns 1999: Tim Couch (Kentucky) – Cleveland Browns 1998: Peyton Manning (Tennessee) – Indianapolis Colts 1997: Orlando Pace (Ohio State) – St. Louis Rams 1996: Keyshawn Johnson (USC) – New York Jets 1995: Ki-Jana Carter (Penn State) – Cincinnati Bengals
