Why did Smith punch Lucas?

I hear a lot of people try and defend Lucas' poor coverage lately but let's ask ourselves this... why did Smith punch Lucas in training camp? mmm

I know everybody is buddy-buddy now. Smith scored that touchdown and gave Lucas the ball BUT I can't help but go back to this summer.

According to eye witnesses (players, coaches, whatever) Smith had been on Lucas ever since Ken signed a free agent deal with the Panthers. Smith had been burning, and probably still burns Ken during every workout and Smith started to get on Ken about his pathetic coverage. The two had been talking but apparently the "talks" weren't working because Smith had continued to just burn Lucas time and time again.

When the fight this summer broke out, according to what I've read, Smith and Lucas were arguing on the sidelines again about how poorly Lucas defended him on one particular play and Smith kept nagging Ken and I guess, Smith who hates people who don't give 110%, got upset with Lucas and his lax coverage and how I guess Smith felt Lucas didn't seem to care enough (show enough passion or dissapointed with himself and his ways) and it pissed Smith off (who plays like the world is against him)... so, well, Smith punched him.

Do I agree with huring Lucas? No. Of course not. BUT even if Smith didn't punch Lucas, even if he just screamed at him and told him to "get better!!" and "stop sucking!!!" isn't there something to be said of that? When your best reciever is so upset with how your cornerback plays and sees problems with his coverage and begs him to get better... maybe Lucas needs help, right? Instead, Smith was labeled crazy, got counseling, and we all forget what happened. Again--- I'm not praising Smith's actions, they are low and totally wrong but MAYBE our best reciever sees it and we don't and why is that? I dunno.

I just wish Lucas played with some passion like Smith and like Minter do and like how Chris Harris does and like how Beason does, and really become a leader for the secondary and lay a hit on somebody and pop a ball loose once in awhile rather than somebody who waits for a reciever to catch a ball, so he can run over and give him a big hug!!! He plays like 5 feet off of everybody he defends. It's frustrating... especially lately!! Smith was basically trying to tell Lucas how to get better and he didn't even care to listen. How frustrating is that? uhh

Again, I'm not saying I agree with what Smith did but he did it and the reasoning I read about this summer - watching Lucas play now - is making a ton of sense.

Any thoughts or is Steve Smith just crazy to argue with Lucas because Lucas is God? Just asking...

Heard the same thing a little while ago

Its like he doesn't even care. And it made Smith mad, so he hit him

I think it was true, because its a pic of him kneeling down and Smith standing over top of him yelling. And it looked like he wasn't even caring

If it was me, I would have definitely got into a confrontation with him also. I might not have popped him, but I probably would have pushed him or grabbed him

Dont got the drive to be the best, get the hell outta football

Smith hit him because Smith is a hot headed ass hole with anger management issues.

Same thing that happened on Sunday night when he got that holding/wrestling call that canceled out a first down and would have made a 50 yard field goal 40 yards. Smith has done plenty to win games over the years but that is one incident where his temper may have cost us a very big one.

    • In your opinion. What do you think Moton's true value in contract, dollars and guarantees? If we had not extended him, what is your plan for RT in 27 and 28? How important are good offensive linemen for our current offense? How much value do you put on protecting Bryce at this stage of his career? How difficult in general do you think finding above average tackles in the NFL is?
    • The Falcons have 2 significant offensive line injuries to start the 2025 season. Right tackle Kaleb Mcgary (who is the blindside protector for Penix since he is left-handed) is going to miss significant time, and it's looking more like it may be all season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-expect-kaleb-mcgary-to-miss-significant-time https://x.com/BKsquared7/status/1959285822236107013. Also, the top backup and swing tackle, Storm Norton (cool name BTW) is having ankle surgery and may miss half the season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-ot-storm-norton-out-6-8-weeks-after-ankle-surgery I don't root for injuries, but its also hard to be too sympathetic given how badly injuries have hit us in recent years. We definitely need to get that W in week 3 for our home opener at BOA. Despite our collective frustration at not being able to attend TC and then having boring preseason games, ultimately the most important objective of the preseason is to enter Week1 healthy, and we have at least done that. Hopefully the depth we think we have at Oline either shines through or isn't needed. Many other teams are in a bad spot with their offensive lines before the season even starts. For once, we aren't in that situation.
    • That roster was billed as a super smart and strong unit for a young QB….until he sucked though.   it didn’t have superstars but it had proven vets that checked well all the safe boxes and it was universally agreed the Panthers were putting him into position to succeed. BY just doesn’t fit a traditional O because he isn’t built like a traditional QB.  And he still doesn’t.   CJ Stroud would have had more success here than Bryce with that cast.   CJ just has the tools that fit the NFL more easily.  Young can find success but I have always argued it would take a Bryce centric plan (which we have never attempted IMO)
