Taylor Mays being compared to Thomas Davis

This article came from the Palm Beach Post, but I am going to leave out the information on the Miami Dolphins; To get the full article click the link above.

Despite some impressive physical tools, USC safety Taylor Mays will not be able to cover consistently in the NFL.

The 6-foot-3, 231-pound Mays has made a couple of impressive hits downfield in between the numbers, but this hasn’t hidden a number of concerns. Observers wonder if he could be cut from the same cloth as Carolina Panthers’ LB Thomas Davis.

Davis was a big, hard-hitting safety at Georgia who was moved to LB in the NFL.

SI.com draft analyst Tony Pauline said Mays, despite being timed running the 40 in 4.32 seconds, struggles to pedal in reverse, cannot plant his foot and drive to the ball and cannot go outside the numbers.

Taylor Mays is a crazy athlete... I'd love seeing him in a Carolina uniform.

At what position, as much as I love May's the guy isn't a great cover safety he's a hitter we already have that in Chris Harris. If he was sitting around at our second round pick I would think about drafting him ala Thomas Davis and moving him to LB right away studying under Diggs, Anderson, Conner whoever wins the position. He is a freak of nature athletically but he also has been known to not play the ball so he can lay somebody out. He was excellent in run support when the defense allowed him to play close to the line of scrimmage however (hardly happened his senior year, Pete played him deep all the time so the inexperienced defense wouldn't get beat). Personally I think his true position is LB and I think he will make an outstanding one in the NFL, anyone who drafts him as a safety will have to hope for the best.

USC has put some pretty pretty good Linebackers in the NFL, like Junior Seau, Brian Cushing, Clay Matthews Keith Rivers, Rey Maualuga, Lofa Tatupu, Kaluka Maiava, and Thomas Williams.

Between the eight of them that is...

Pro Bowls- 17

First Round Picks- 4

They have also put a couple of sick secondary players in the NFL to. Troy Polamalu, Kevin Ellison looks extremely promising for the Chargers, Eric Wright who is very underrated in Cleveland started his college career at USC, Terell Thomas also looks to have a very promising career ahead of him. Actually USC just puts defensive players and QB's in the NFL period.

    • You're assuming just as well.   Morgan and Canales were hired 3 days apart.  I believe it was partially due to their connections in Seattle.  i believe Tepper wanted some familiarity with his GM and HC.  It is so easy to sit back and arm-chair QB over draft picks.  You don't know what the philosophy was going into the 2024 draft.  I believe Canales and Morgan were drafting for the future.  XL and Brooks point to that philosophy. Name me one GM that is 100% on draft picks.  Just one.  You're not going to find one.    I think year one picks weren't for what can you do for me now but Potential.   XL hasn't lived up to the hype of a 1st rounder.  I think we all can agree on that. However, there still is hope he comes around.  What I believe they saw in him was his speed after the catch.  He needs to get more consistent but when he gets the ball you kind of hold your breath just a second because if he gets free, he's gone.  The Brooks pick was a signing for the future, and no one could have guessed he would re-injure the same ACL.  This makes the pick look bad but Dallas was ready to draft him later that same round.  IMO we'll have to see what happens next season before we can call this a bust. Wallace has improved each season and for a third rounder has done well.  Sanders has shown flashes and considering the pick in the 4th round it wasn't a bad pick.  His sophomore season IMO was a little bit more productive.  Smith-Wade has been a good addition and has played well.  For a 5th round pick to get as much playing time as he has.  Most picks below round 3 should take a couple of years to get up to speed.  He's been a decent player.  Crumedy, no comment We turned Barrett into Jackson.  This was an amazing move and basically got a starting CB for a 7th round pick.  Pretty shrewd if you ask me. Coker, maybe the best Free Agent signing of the 2024 draft class. So, in short, you can't say that the draft was a bust.  It isn't a home run but all but one are still on the team and outside of Brooks have made contributions to wins.  2025 draft class has been much better with almost every pick making contributions this season.  Now take Fitterer's two years and compare them to Morgan and tell me that they have the same philosophy.
    • He hasn’t led crap, he’s on loaded teams and a piece of the puzzle. And he’s he has improved drastically but it took the ultimate QB whispers in Shanahan and KOC. You put him on this Panther team and he’s back to normal Darnold
    • Slavin and Jarvis week to week. Florida cheap shots took out our two best players.  I’d start KK so he can beat the brakes off someone.
