i've been meaning to read The Forever War on your recommendation Inimicus. Library just hasn't brought it around yet.

In that case these are 3 of my favorites.

The Forever War - Simply everything you want and expect from SiFi. A magnificent novel that I cant say enough good things about.

Altered Carbon - Hard boiled detective noir with a SiFi twist. This guy picks up where Neromancer and Snow Crash left off for the cyberpunk genre. First of a series of 3.

Armor - This is just a lot of fun. Couldn't put it down.

Altered Carbon sounds like my style. I love it when multiple genres are successfully infused.

you actually might like Doomesday Book then, it's a pretty effective mix of sci-fi and historical fiction without becoming alt. history.

love me some sc-fi noir though. might have to check that one out.

Sounds like what Martin did with Song of Ice and Fire. Its like a mystery/political/historical fiction fused with a light tapestry of fantasy. Very gritty adult fiction. There's a joke between myself and my friends that he really wanted to write some porn, and disguised it as fantasy. The sex scenes are not graphic though. Just more than you would expect from fantasy.

Old Man's War by John Scalzi

Forever War isn't available on kindle, I had to buy the actual book (Barnes and Noble). How dare he make me read it the old fashioned way! I'm about halfway through. Great book for it's time, still relevant (as long as you have an "I believe" button that works), and the author has a much more modern view than Heinlen. Simple straightforward sci-fi so far. Not quite on the level of Heinlen, but still very good. Head and shoulders above anything being published now.

Gordon R Dickson's Dorsai-Childe Cycle is a good series if you prefer military style, killemall sci-fi. It's been 10-15 years since I read it (back when I was still in the military). I need to go back and see how it reads now that I have a much more "civilian" view of things.

I've been trying to remember one of my favorite trilogies for like a year now and it's the Cycle of Fire by Janny Wurts.

Started reading the first book of The Wheel of Time series, The Eye of the World. This book is a task to get through. He delves so far into detail that it becomes difficult to follow at times.

Finally got and read "The Forever War." Interesting book... enjoyed it. Are Forever Free and Forever Peace worth reading?

Dr. Futurity, The Man in the High Castle, 3 Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch

All badass. Highly recommend Man in the High Castle and 3 Stigmata.
