Name Change?

No one's ever asked Jerry to sell or rename his team. Even when we went 1-15 a year after the Carruth trial.

People are asking Jordan to change it because they feel that Bob Johnson named the team after himself calling them the, "BOBcats" and the name has little to do with the city and it's own identity.

Some names just make sense. The Detroit Pistons because they use to make cars in the motor city... I GET IT! The San Francisco 49ers because of the California gold rush... I GET IT! The Celtics because Boston has a large Scottish population... I GET IT!

Some names make me wonder how late someone was up, coming up with such clever ones... Names like the "Miami Heat"! It's HOT in Miami, that's it? haha And the New Jersey Nets actually named their team the "Nets" because it sounded like both the New York Jets and Mets. I wish I was joking... SOME NAMES ARE JUST TOTALLY LAME.

And true, there are no lakes in L.A. or jazz in Utah! I know that.

Look, in my wildest dreams, the NBA would step in and force Utah to change it's name to something that makes more sense (the Salt Lake Magical Underwear!) and give the Jazz name back to New Orleans (where it belongs) and the Hornets name back to Charlotte. I know the city doesn't have a rich history, like taking the Browns away from Cleveland. BUT come on!!! You did it for the Supersonics.

From a marketing standpoint, the Hornets just had a ring to it! You had the local history with the name plus team colors that worked and fans calling the Coliseum, "the Hive"... it all just worked!!!

If I see any of that hope with any of the names mentioned.. it's "the Flight". You call the arena, "the Hanger", etc. I know the reference is more statewide than Charlotte, but it's much more marketable than the Dragons or Knights.

And before you say, "Air Jordan & the Flight".. isn't that selfish like Bob Johnson's BOBcats... NO IT ISN'T. Their is a flight connection to the Carolinas. With Bobcats there isn't. It was silly from the start, and any marketing guru would have pulled Bob to the side and said that isn't a wise move. Unfortunately, they didn't... Those same gurus are telling Mike, CHANGE THE NAME... IT'S A WISE MOVE.

And as far as people arguing over what a Flight mascot would be... Seriously, does it matter? What is Denver's mascot, a giant gold nugget? haha No, it's a stupid cat. Mascots don't need to relate to the team's name. Even the Spurs mascot is a coyote and the Jazz, some sort of pig-bear. haha

Its the equivalent of black people who work for Wells Fargo asking the company to change the name because it bothers them so much they work for an organization named after two "slavery-era" rich white men. I guess only white people are allowed to name the organizations they build after themselves. Those people that are so bothered that this team could be named after a black man need to get over themselves and work on their low self-esteem.

Take some of your own advice. In a league with Kings and Grizzlies and Wizards, Bobcats just doesn't get it done for most people. Especially since it wasn't a local or even regional thing, but rather an ego thing for the owner.

Any sane person knows it should be the New Orleans Jazz and the Charlotte Hornets. Why isn't it? Because of George Shinn's ego. Egos are a very very bad thing, especially for fans tired of paying for a poor product.

If Sharpton and Jackson tried to start a movement to get JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo to change their names from a bunch of slavery era robberbarrons that black people cant relate to, you'd be the first to call them crybabies and declare that rich white men are absolute and can name their business anything they want. Doesnt matter if they havent owned those business in over 100 years, they are allowed to preserve their legacies and pass along their wealth. Just like you feel JR doesnt have to listen to his fans who want the logo midfield or are screaming for Vick. "Its his team, he can do what he wants!" A black man does it, its "ego".

How many lakes do you know of in Southern California? Ever seen a Panther in NC? Or a bull running down the streets of Southside Chicago? Who said a team's mascot has to have something to do with the city they play in? Only people in NC who are obsessed with the Revolutionary & Civil Wars think everything in their town gotta be named after them. And no matter what Charlotteans think they dont "own" the Hornets name. George Shinn does and I think he's happy to be in New Orleans.

If their customers raised a stink, I guarantee you they'd change their name. So now robberbarons are tied to slavery because they existed at the same time? You take the cake, Jefferson.

That name should have been changed, and I know a lot of people who feel that way.

Ever seen a Panther in NC?

Talk to Mark Richardson. He named them and picked the colors.

Or a bull running down the streets of Southside Chicago?

They named them the Bulls because they already had the Bears. Stock market.

Who said a team's mascot has to have something to do with the city they play in?

The fans, you know, the ones who actually foot the bill for your little escape from reality?

Utah agreed to give up Jazz back to New Orleans. Utah had had Jazz for 20 years and made the finals twice. But would Shinn in turn give Hornets back to Charlotte? No, he wanted Bob Johnson to pay him millions to cover his costs in stationary and equipment. Shinn just wanted to stick it to Charlotte and you know it.

New Orleans Jazz, Charlotte Hornets, Utah (whatever their fans want).....makes a hell of a lot more sense than Utah Jazz, New Orleans Hornets and Charlotte Bobcats.

    • I have not read the entire thread, and I realize this is fluff to a degree, but it was recorded in real time.  Here are 10 things that stood out to me: 1. Morgan wrote down (before day 3) the first three day 3 picks.  (Lee, Hecht, and Wheatley).  I was never fond of the Morgan hiring as GM.  I thought he was a lazy selection and I questioned his ability to match wits with some of the best GMs in the NFL.  Not any more. Morgan OWNED this draft.  He knew which players were good fits and when they would be bargains, and he got bargains.  I am thoroughly excited about every player. 2. Canales said (about Hecht, a 5th rounder):  "He has a real chance to start."   Morgan said the same thing about Freeling. While I do not expect either to start day 1, it looks to me like we drafted 40% of our starting OL in 2026.  I think we will sign Ickey to a deal and play him at RG, allowing us to escape the Robert Hunt contract in 2027.  Of course that is conditional, and Ickey could replace Moton instead, but if he fully recovers, we are looking at a better RG/RT than he was a LT--which was average.  3. When Morgan said to second-round DT Hunter, "Ready to play beside Derrick Brown?"  Based on personalities, one calm and soft spoken (for the Most part, Brown is) and the other talkative and openly enthusiastic, it reminded me of Brentson Buckner and Kris Jenkins.   4.  Perhaps the steal of the draft was Tennessee WR Chris Brazzell II.  Clearly the Panthers felt that they passed on him when they took Hunter in round 2.  They mentioned his skill set (able to attack on "all three levels.")  This sent me back to watching film. He has speed, hands, and he produced without a great QB. I think he could be great in the NFL.  When  5. Tepper was a bit more involved than I would like, but he seems to be very confident in Morgan.  If I were the owner, I would be doing the same thing.  Canales was also somewhat of a background character--everyone understood his role and stayed in his lane.   6.  I am also very interested in the quantitative analytics aspect of the draft room.  (something like, "He has a 94% chance of being there at pick 55, and a 38% chance of being there at 87). I would like to know their formula, because it seemed to be spot on. 7.  BPA?  Not really.  They had a shopping list and seemed to be targeting the players they selected. I realize other players were edited out, but I was impressed how they knew, by round, who they wanted and if there were multiple options sitting there, they traded back. 8.  Evero (I think) called Lee a candidate that would serve as the "#3 CB."  Morgan describes his size as a plus (Long). Strong praise for a 4th rounder.  If so, we have Thornton coming off injury who played well as an UDFA rookie and they will battle it out to become Jackson's replacement after the 2026 season, assuming the Panthers do not extend him (he turns 30 in 7 months.O 9.  I think we could realistically see every one of these draft picks play this season, and I believe most could start by next year--Realistically, Freeling, Hunter, Hecht, and Brazzell could all be starting or key rotational pieces this year.  I see Lee and Wheatley getting special teams reps and both could be used this season more than expected.   10.  Kuwatch seemed to be predetermined with the final pick, probably because he can add something special to special teams.   He and Bam Martin Scott will fight it out for the 4th ILB position, so it will probably come down to special teams--and Kuwatch stands out there.  Imagine an ILB with a 46.5 vertical (not a typo) on the FG block team.  Kuwatch has an 8.85 RAS score vs. Martin-Scott's 7.5.
    • They did mention Bain as the pick if he fell but didnt seem confident that would be the case.
    • Exactly what I am thinking.
