Statue For Jake Delhomme

nothing against your thoughts but the only reason he did anything for this franchise is because Fox was to stubborn to bench his ass and get someone new in and thats a fact, we saw how good moore was at the end of 07 so y not let him compete in 08??? yeah we made the playoffs and had a great season with Jake, but Jake was horrible that year and our ground game carried us, and last year had Moore been the starter who knows where we could have ended up, I know we are a hell of alot better then the saints.........

And on top of that, look at his stats, he has ALWAYS struggled with throwing costly int's and aside from one season, he was less then average.....

So he should've been bench in 03 when he took us to the Super Bowl, or in 04 when he put up the best stats of his career while leading us to the brink of a playoff spot after starting 1-7, or in 05 when he took us to the NFC Championship game?

For the first 5 years Jake was here he was one of the most clutch Qb's in the last two minutes of a game. If we were down by less than a touchdown with two minutes left everyone knew that we were going to score. He didn't start making costly mistakes until the last year and half.

As I said earlier, Jake has had a greater impact on this franchise than any individual player ever has. If it wasn't for him, we would probably be the Browns of the NFC South right now.

Got damn! Please get Jake's nuts out of your mouth!

Steve Smith has had a greater impact on this franchise AND the NFL as a whole than Jake. Jake was what we needed for the Super Bowl run, but has held our franchise back for the past 2 years along with John Fox. No one is going to remember the "good times" of Jake in 10 years except Jake fans. Most are going to remember the Super Bowl run and piss poor Jake in 2008 & 09.

I think people are just looking for something to make Jake end his career as a Panther on a better note. The fact is that he went out like a bum and there is nothing that anybody can do to make it better.

Seriously, Delhomme lovers, you need to get real. I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think that people hate Jake, they just acknowledge the fact that he is not what many people make him out to be. You have to keep things in perspective. Carolina is still the new kid on the block as far as NFL teams go, and as such we don't have the history and tradition that some other teams have. We really should have more longevity as a franchise before people start making grandiose exclamations. Of course Jake has been the most storied QB in our franchise history, because we really haven't been around that long. For all intents and purposes he has been our only QB of note, except for Steve Beuerlein who was towards the end of his career when he became a Panther. The fact is, like I said in another thread, if Beuerlein had been 10 years younger, then he would have probably been our guy (granted, it's pretty pointless to speculate). So, all in all, Delhomme has been the "best" QB in our franchise history basically by default, so stop acting as though he has been Brett Favre, which brings me to my second point: Delhomme has not even been near the best in terms of qaurterbacks in NFL history. He hasn't been special. When looking in terms of NFL history, Delhomme has been decidedly average. He is not even in the topic of Hall of fame territory, but because he has been the Panthers' "best" QB in a relatively short history, the ill-advised want to put him in our own ring of fame. Nostalgia doesn't an outstanding player make. People may say, "If it hadn't been for Jake, we would have never made it to the Super Bowl." I reply, "How in the hell do you know?" How do you know? Perhaps we could have made a run at a Rivers or a Manning and been to two or three Super Bowls by now. To me, that whole argument is a little shaky. It's somewhat circular---meaning that we can go around in circles about it all day long.

To me, The Jake-Panther situation has always been about opportunity costs.

And, sorry, Jakes presence on the team---particularly for the past year---has cost the team negatively, and had gotten to the point where it was costing others, like Matt Moore---to shine.

Don't get me wrong. Jake has been a good game manager, and maybe even flirted with greatness for one season. He seems like a good guy. And, yes, he should be should be given a classy exit, just like most of the guys who have ever put on a Panther uniform, but it was time for him to go.

I thank him for his services and the good memories.

Needless to say, a statue is ludicrous.

To play devils advocate did Sam Mills win us a SB? no

Was Sam Mills the best LB in the league? no (i was a lot younger than and didn't pay much attention to stats so correct me if i'm wrong)

I don't think the idea of getting a statue is all about the play on the field though some of it is, I think it's is more about the intangibles.

All that being said, I'm not sure I like the idea of any sports figure getting a statue.

Yes.

I know there are a lot of young Panthers fans that don't remember Sam Mills and don't understand why it was INCREDIBLY obvious to give him every honor possible even if he only played here three years. To those that never saw him play, check out some of the old Panthers Team Highlights videos on www.hulu.com/nfl.

As for the next person that should get statueized or put in the ring of honor, there is only one possibility on this team right now: 89. Don't give me this Jake/Minter/Rucker BS. Kasay would deserve one if he wasn't a kicker. But you can't have your second player inducted be a kicker. That would just be sad.

When Sam passed away, I bawled like a little girl for weeks. Not only is he the greatest Panther, he's one of the greatest MEN I've ever had the opportunity to meet. If more players had his heart, we would have multiple Super Bowl trophies. If more men in general acted like Sam, the world would be an amazing place.

    • Here's the thing. You compared him to Jake. Jake was signed to the practice squad out of college. Bryce was the number 1 overall. Their expectations are wildly different and so are their contracts. You can talk all you want about what a player is and where they are now and all this other mumbo jumbo, but Jake never had a 5th year option and we weren't talking about the possibility of a top 5 QB contract extension at the end of his 3rd year. What he was expected to be matters because we invested heavily at a cost of future capital, including a 2nd round pick this year, for him to be that guy. The cost to add Bryce took value from the team. To be worth it, he has to add that value back.  Actually, I don't prefer yards, TDs, or only INTs. All those stats by themselves are misleading which is why I said you have to use a lot of different stats. ADOT - Average depth of target.  Completion %. Pretty obvious until you factor in ADOT. 0-5 has a lot higher C% than 10-15%. Hang time. If a pass is in the air for 4.6 seconds vs 3.1 on a 40 yards throw, that gives a DB a lot of time to correct. Is it a loft or is it a laser.  EPA - Expected points added. A way of measuring QB efficiency on every play.  CPOE - ranking pass completions based on several factors, not just the throw.  There's obviously more, but those are the more common.  Typical stats don't show everything. You need to look all over. Looking at a stat line is lazy. That's why I said, you need to analyze everything. Once you start looking at the numbers you start looking at the player. That's why you follow numbers. They lead you places. You look at what happening when the numbers show you patterns. That's where you start finding the problems that yards, TDs and Ints won't show you.
    • It's not relevant who wins or loses. It's about actually attempting to get better at the position.
    • Thank you. I don't understand how the Bryce stans don't see this. I've never seen a player get more hyped for doing so little. Honestly it's driving me a little insane.
