rayzor's 7 round panther picks (aka waste of time)

it is incredibly doubtful that the panthers first pick will be #48. marty hurney will move the panthers up somehow probably giving up the first next year. thats just what he does. as much as i would love him to get the team up into the first where they can take golden tate they will probably have a scenario like they did last year when they traded the 2010 1st for a 2009 earlier 2nd and a 4th. that is what i based this on, giving the panthers 10 picks including the 3 comp picks. i think there is also a slim chance that the panthers could trade their 2nd for brandon marshall esp. since smith came out and said he's tired of being the #1WR. not really counting on that but it is a possibility.

2nd Brian Price- DT- UCLA- sure, he may be gone by then but it's pretty likely they will try to bump up and get someone like him. they need more at DT and price will be fierce there. i like his motor and intelligence.

2nd- Mardy Gilyard- WR/KR Cincinnati- super quick, dangerous in the open field. established route runner and returner. provides talent at two areas of need. i could see Taylor Price going here as well but then we'd have to draft a return specialist like brandon banks later.

3rd- Austen Lane- DE Murray St.- great big speed rusher. the guy will be a force. i like charles johnson and tyler brayton on rushing downs but everette brown and austen lane on passing downs could be a thing of beauty. i could go with george selvie just as easily here who probably fits into the small speed rusher mold that meeks prefers.

4th- Eric Decker - WR Minnesota- Panthers need to revamp the WR position. jarrett looked good in that last game of the season but it was just one game. Decker is NFL ready. while gilyard might take a bit to adjust to the pro level, decker could hit the ground running. not much YAC but he's as solid as they come. Blair White would be another option here. Looking for that big possession receiver.

4th- Jarrett Brown- QB West Virginia- Good long term QB project. Not ready for the pro game but he has all the tools.

6th- Myron Rolle- SS Florida St.- Depth at SS is needed and Rolle is incredibly solid there. He's very smart and would be better in pass coverage than chris harris. I'm not bothered by his missing a year. if he hadn't he would probably be taken a good bit earlier.

6th- Armanti Edwards- QB/WR/PR Appalachian St.- Panthers are very interested in him. great all around talent and athlete willing to play anywhere he is asked. that will be an advantage he has over pat white from last year. panthers WR coach went out to see his pro day and they asked him to return punts as well. he will be good where ever he plays and the panthers love multi-position players or taking players out of their natural position and putting them in another.

6th- Stevenson Sylvester- OLB Utah- Panthers lost Na'ill Diggs promoting Dan Connor to Sam and may be losing some depth since James Anderson is feeling slighted since he isn't getting the nod to take Diggs spot and isn't signing his tender. Plus with Thomas Davis coming off a torn ACL there is more attention needed at OLB. Using this pick and the one following to pick up a couple low risk/high reward projects seems like a good move. I like how sylvester is all over the place getting to the ball. fits perfectly with what meeks wants to do. sylvester also has some great intangibles as well.

7th- Simoni Lawrence- OLB Minnesota- Very raw prospect but a ton of potential. he's quick and very aggressive. he could be a steal. both he and sylvester seem like small LBs but they fit the panthers LB mold just fine. meeks wants them small quick and aggressive with a good eye for the ball.

7th- Thomas Austin- OG/OC Clemson- depth on the interior of the Oline isn't really an issue but having someone who can fill in at OC if kalil gets hurt would be good. the one who would be backing him up will probably have the start at RG (mackenzie bernadeau). best available OT would work just fine here as well.

btw....i could see us going after Taylor Price in the 2nd instead of Gilyard but then we would still need to address the KR/PR situation in which case we could take Brandon Banks or LeRoy Vann in the 6th instead of a OLB.

First off I totally agree in regards to Marty Hurney. If he was feeling the pressure last year I bet he is going to be more risky this time around. Especially considering how this offseason has gone so far, we have been busy cutting dead weight to this team.

Every day Im more and more sure Marty Gilyard will probably be the player we select in the second. If we obtain another pick I doubt we will draft a DT. I get the feel from the organization that they are looking to take a more pass rushing DE to play with Brown. But I could see us trading alot to get into the first to get that USF DE or Carlos Dunlap.

I doubt we take Jarrett Brown as a QB. John Skelton will be there around that time and is a good project player with excellent measurables.

I can see us going Taylor Price route later in the third possibly. But I like alot of other players who are returners who we should be able to pick up with one of our 6th round picks. Trindon Holliday is extremely fast and had some great returns in the Texas Vs. the Nation game. He is also versatile and could possibly lineup in some Wildcat formation

the thing that keeps drawing me back to gilyard is his talent as a KR/PR. the guy is really good. he's one of those guys that anytime the ball is in his hands he is a threat. there might be better receivers available there but aside form tate i don't think any would be able to match the dual threat as a receiver/returner like him.

Not sure. Just not a huge fan at this point of 2nd rd. WRs with character and motivation issues. Undersized ones at that.

not sure about those character and motivation issues you are referring to. he did some punk things as a kid that cost him a lot but instead of just giving up or making excuses and just waiting for someone to give him another chance he owned it and used that moment to make himself better.

he fought hard for the first chance and when he let it fall away he fought even harder for a second chance. the dude is a fighter who isn't going to be taken things for granted and blowing away opportunities. he's going to be the opposite of jarrett as far as work ethic and dedication goes. guys who learn lessons like that don't have to learn them again.

when you look at his story, don't just stop at the screw up. read the whole thing. i'm probably a bit partial to it because it's a lot like what i went through when i was younger.
