Remember these words...

I would like a younger guy to come in and eventually take my spot. I don't want to be a No. 1 anymore. I don't want to be a guy who can't let go of something he's got to let go. I would like to be a guy that can play in the slot all day...

To be honest, the next five years, I want to enjoy playing. And I really haven't enjoyed playing because I had goals where I was like 'I want this', 'I want that.' And in the process, I kind of forgot that I'm playing my dream. So I just want to settle down and fade away in a good way, not in a bad way.

This is the writing on the wall... Smith is giving us a head's up... He ain't gonna be playing at his level much longer, and would like his last few years to be good years, where the pressure isn't squarely on his shoulders in the passing game...

We have to go WR in the second, and we have to get a starter...

Tate.

I really hope that when the time comes we have managed to find someone who can be at least 3/4 of the receiver that Smith is. Tate could be that guy, he just isn't quite as fast as Smith but seems shifty and tough to tackle.

who can blame him.. imagine having a 2nd solid receiver for the last 5 years.. any excuse as to why we don't need or want a solid 2nd guy is fuging stupid.. you are taking away fire power, I don't care how good our running game is.. it wasn't good enough in the playoff game.. that turned out fuging great... and when injuries decimated us in '05, we were left blown out because we didn't have 1 more guy to step up..

we should have done this poo 5 years ago.. and yet, in 2010's offseason, we are still letting top quality players go... very frustrating..

i agree. and i'm simply surprised that it's taken smitty this long to speak up. i'm sure he's maybe said a few things here and there throughout the years, but never this substantial. and when you think about it, not too many guys really speak their words on our team. and for smith to say something, i think the coaching staff and FO have to at least consider smiths words of wisdom. the guy needs a 2nd receiver to really reach his complete potential, i just wish the FO would see this and not just the fans and steve smith.

If it's not a WR my tv is going out the window.

same.. matter of fact, with their track record, we better be going for 2 WRs...

If we were to ever trade next years 1st, this would be a smart year to do it.. forget that we've done that 2 years in a row.. if we did it in the past, it makes more sense to do it this year.

thats the whole problem with this draft and with they way this offseason went down. we almost have to get starters out of a lot of our draft picks!

what is funny is that we have 2 1st round allstar caliber running backs and a oline designed to run and we were the 3rd best running team. with that much invested we should have been the #1 team running the football.

the problem is when you can't throw the ball because defenses stack 4 guys on Smitty.. you have to run, stack the box and game over.

all we need is 1 guy to step up.. our FO hasn't done anything to help with that. any excuses, are bullshit. there have been opportunities.. face the fact, we will stay mediocre on offense come playoff time until we change our philosophy a bit. until then, we are sitting by praying we even make the playoffs.. real respectable..

    • You joke, but it can always be worse. He might walk with a limp or need assistance. Different sport, but Lonzo Ball couldn't even walk up steps a year after his injury.
    • I mean... a lot of the information that could've helped set better expectations has always been out there: There was no RB on the team under contract for the 2025 - 2026 season except for Miles Sanders. The team did not have a second round pick going into the 2025 season due to the trade for Young. Chuba's extension did not happen until the beginning of November. Jonathon Brooks was the clear RB1 in the class with a massive gap between RB1 & RB2. Example: Dane Brugler had Brooks as RB1, overall #48; Blake Corum was RB2, #81 overall. The Giants held pick #47 and had just lost Saquon Barkley to the Eagles in free agency. They were going to take Brooks had the Panthers not jumped in front of them. So if we're framing things with that context: Chuba was expected to be RB1 Miles (at the time) was RB2 Brooks was essentially RB3, stashed for rehab in 2024 with a long runway. The original injury occurred Nov 2023 while the re-injury occurred December 2024. That is right in the high-risk window for recurrence, especially in explosive athletes. The fact that it also happened on a non-contact play suggests possible biomechanical issues such as muscle imbalance, rather than a failed surgery (or bad decision-making).   NFL teams invest heavily in medically vetting prospects. If there had been a clear red flag in imaging or recovery markers, the team is going to find it. This sucks and the Panthers have sucked, yes, but this wasn't blind optimism or malpractice by the front office. It was a calculated decision based on the roster, draft capital, positional scarcity, etc.
    • Yep, but they can all rotate with Brown, Brown and Robinson (sounds like a law firm). Can't continue to have Derrick Brown out there for 90+ percent of the defensive snaps. An injury was bound to happen.
