If we could get a 2nd rounder for Steve Smith, would you take it?

There'd be no logic to it right now. A second round pick doesn't help till next year.

We'd need to pick up another receiver to take his place, and trade is the only option that would net a receiver that quality.

People would be asking "If you have to make a trade to replace him, why'd you trade him away in the first place?"

And they'd be right.

At 31 we have seen the PEAK of SS, I love the guy but he has two top tier years max left in him then he will drop off quick like Torry Holt did.... I would rather get something for the guy then to let top talent walk away without any compensation (Peppers). It is obvious this team is going towards a youth movement phase.

Make a great point, but the thing is, Smith is not just a good player with value running out of time.. he means more than that to the die hard fans ..and to the Panthers. And obviously same with Mr. Richardson, because if he didn't care for Smitty like he does, he would have had Smith already traded, for his past and his fiery character, but Jerry understands him. They have a bond.

We have been blessed to have a guy with such heart and passion like Steve Smith. You just don't trade that away IMO.

With all that said, this thread comes off as some strong stealth trolling. But still....

You've got Dain Bramage son.

Steve Smith throughout his career has defied the odds, the expectations and what people thought was even possible for man of his size and build . . . I fully Expect Steve to continue to defy the odds by being productive as a Receiver much longer than most people expect.

After we selected Jimmy Claussen, the ESPN draft commentators were going on with how lucky it was Claussen fell to the Panthers and Steve Young said this about Steve Smith.

"No matter what you think about Steve Smith . . . you've underestimated him. If you think he is the best receiver in the league . . . you've underestimated him!"

Yes that was what 3 Super Bowl winner, Hall of Fame Quarterback, Steve Young said this 7 days ago.

For my money I'll keep Steve Smith for as long as he wants to wear a Panthers uniform. Even if he loses a step or two having a player or Coach with that indomitable spirit is incredibly valuable to the Whole team. If anyone needs to "Man Up" he is the man to show them how.

If there ever was a Panther who has earned the right and privilege to retire as a Panther, it is STEVE SMITH

So dude take this stupid attempt at being an insightful contrarian and go to the girl's field hockey board they'll appreciate the attention when you reach your Junior year.

he's already lost a step. if he keeps losing steps then i'd definitely trade him for a 2nd round pick in a few years. not now though. he's still too good and none of our other receivers have proved themselves yet.

there's a lot of you folks going "noooo he has to retire a panther"! i wonder if any of you were the same ones who were criticizing people when they were upset at some of the cuts this year, like hoover. there were a lot saying it was dumb to say we had to keep people so they'd retire with the team.

if steve smith ends up being a relatively unproductive member of the team, you'd rather have him than a 2nd round draft pick just because of his attitude? he's had the same attitude since he's been on the team and it obviously hasn't helped our receivers. 2nd round draft pick > veteran leadership.

He has fired up our defense and offense on numerous occasions by his play, by his attitude, by his spirit this has won games that we would have lost.

If he becomes a "relatively unproductive member of our team" no one would give us a 2nd round pick. That is not the question being asked here why are you changing the parameters to keep the criticism on?

Also we have dumped more than enough Veteran Leadership. It has value if you don't know it. You ever play or coach a Team?

the original question didn't specify when we should trade him. by "relatively unproductive", all i meant was we have 2 other receivers who are better than him. i didn't mean he was totally washed up. teams do weird things. some team with no good receivers may trade a 2nd rounder for him at that point. who knows? it's just a hypothetical question. yes, veteran leadership is important, but not more important than a 2nd round pick. unless that veteran is a starter, i'd take the pick.
