What I heard from one of the announcers on NFL Sirius (who played in the league) is that they test you for illegal drugs early in camp and that is it for the year. They are mostly interested in testing for performance enhancing drugs which they do randomly throughout the year. Since Pot isn't a performance enhancing drug they don't really care about it that much. Most people who get busted do so as a result of a scrape with the law or a vehicle stop. Once you have been caught and are in rehab, they do test regularly.
