Let's say you're Jerry Richardson or Michael Jordan pitching Charlotte to a superstar

Recommended Posts

You're trying to persuade the best player in the NFL or the NBA to come play in Charlotte. You can match any other team's money offer, so you have to sell them on other things...the teams themselves, the city, anything that would make them pick the Panthers over the Patriots or the Bobcats over the Heat.

What do you tell that superstar free agent to convince them to pack their bags and come to Charlotte?

When you really think about what you would do in that situation, you'll suddenly realize what Charlotte is 0 for life when it comes to winning Super Bowls or NBA Finals and neither team is even going to sniff titles any time soon.

So why don't you become a Laker or Patriot fan or something.

Why do players play the game?

We've been to the Super Bowl so what are you talking about?

Charlotte doesn't have such a bad reputation. Cleveland and Detroit do for good reason. This is a very nice place to live. People were talking about David Carr like," oh he would never pick us" and he did. So did Reggie White. What are you saying?

Actually, this whole LeBron thing is really opening my eyes to the competitive disadvantage the Panthers and Bobcats have just because they're located in Charlotte. The Panthers have to overcome a lot to succeed, but it can be done. It's true, they've been to a SB and small-market New Orleans just won. When small market teams in the NFL succeed, it's because they've really overachieved.

The Bobcats though? They won't win a title in our lifetimes. The team will fold or move decades from now and will never win a title.

By the way, I didn't mean for the original post to come off like it did. I'm proud of the way the Panthers have done well in the past despite having to try and get players to come to Charlotte. That doesn't change the fact that it's hard to do.

Bobcats won't win a championship because Stern would never let them, not because it's in Charlotte.

The NFL isn't the NBA/MLB. You don't win championships by getting big free agents to sign with your team.

The last time the Panthers/Bobcats/Hornets signed a great, high-profile player that was still great when he came here was Kevin Greene 14 years ago. That's it really. Reggie White and Keyshawn Johnson were way over-the-hill once they signed here. And I can't think of a single great NBA player that has ever signed to play with a Charlotte team.

If you go to or watch the games and see some of these you would think that.

    • In general, It's just unfortunate that he got hurt. But...I'd argue that all's well that ends well; the Panthers are in a better place in regards to the RB room, and, not only has CMC had the opportunity to almost win his team a championship in overtime of the Super Bowl, he's playing for a franchise known for solidity if not historical excellence.
    • Ummm not sure adding anther 5'9 180 pound soaking wet forward is the way to go here.....
    • What has happened in HS athletics busted full force into the college world with this NIL/transfer portal stuff. HS sports has been jacked up for a long time now. You have all these "prep schools" that are basically just diploma mills for athletes who hoover up all the good athletes they can get and they're all on scholarship. Then they go out and recruit decent athletes with rich parents to come onboard and pay outrageous tuition while they tout their success at getting their athletes college scholarships. Yeah, those athletes getting college scholarships are the same ones you're giving scholarships to so that you can use them to recruit the rich kids whose parents can pay for it all. You see the same thing in youth travel ball leagues. The whole thing is just getting crazy.
