Fox Says Jake Will Most Likely Start in 2009

I love how much people want to point to the 2007 season without jake, did we not finish 7-9? Not bad for a team that was rotating 4 different qbs, including a retired 40 something year old, and an undrafted rookie who won us some games. So while our record wasn't great we didn't have a set starter either. We had multiple short term fixes. If we went and got a QB that we planned on using as our starter and that player went through training camp and all i'm sure he could pull out a decent season as well, hell we are a run first time and we run the ball just fine. However when we need to go to the air we have to rely on our receiver more then our qb. just a thought

jake is the type of guy that will work harder than anyone to be better next season.

it still blows me away that people think jake can actually get better. there was a reason he wasn't drafted, a reason he played behind KW in NFLE, a reason he was a backup on the saints... he's not a consistent QB and really not all that good.

anytime i see jake make a throw like he did in SD to start the season, i think to myself, "exception, not the rule". he TOO often throws short, behind, high, low and very rarely right on target where the receiver can catch it on the run w/o making adjustments (and thus being caught immediately be the defense).

someone said he's not a game changer; i disagree. he's definitely a game changer, but not in the good kind of way.

we all bitch that jarrett can't run routes or hackett can't get open ad nauseum. i think the problem is jake couldn't hit the barn side of a broad on nine of ten throws. he is woefully inaccurate which contrary to the belief on this board is the most important job of the QB; get the ball on time, on target to the right receiver.

i'm not denying that jake has great intangibles or that he's a good leader, but that's not the point. the point is he's not very good at what he's meant to do; throw the ball.

i doubt somehow that having an accurate, yet *less vocal* QB, would mean the team would support whoever it is less. they'll support whomever can go out there, do there job well and not single handedly lose a game for them. say what you will but six turnovers is insurmountable. i dont give a rats ass if the defense is playing lights out. you can't turn the ball over SIX times and expect to win.

we need an upgrade or if that's not available the coaches need to make the position open to competition and not simply hand the reins off to someone simply because they've been the starter (a la deshaun foster).

Like it or not, right now Jake gives us the best chance of winning. I hope training camp has open competition for the starting QB, but even if it does I bet Jake wins the job fairly.

Maybe next year Davidson will focus more on the running game and scheme to Jake's strengths like Henning did.

he might prove the people wrong who think hes gonna have a good year. If you watched him play all year, like others have said his passes have been off. If you want him gone just based on last night alone, then no. But if you have seen him all year, you will see how many over throws, or off passes he has. If we didn't have the outstanding recievers we did he would have even worse numbers. Sooner or later they are going to have to address this situation if they want to make any progress.

I don't believe that Jake's performace this season warrants him being released from the Panthers. For the most part, he was solid...not spectacular or outstanding, but solid. Only 7 other teams made it as far as the Panthers did - that says something.

Another point to bring up is that he's going to be making top 5-6 QB money next year.

I'm convinced that we have the team that we need in order to win a Superbowl (with the expection of some adjustments in the secondary).

From what I've observed, football isn't always so black and white. It's a game where anything can happen. The most talented team doesn't always win. You can change your roster from now until kingdom come, but as John Fox would say, "It is what it is."

Sometimes being talented and playing hard isn't all it takes to win a game. If it's not in the cards for your team, it's not gonna happen. I hate to say that it's "fate", but that's the closest concept I can think of to explain what I'm trying to say. Whenever we lose everyone wants to fire the whole team and start all over again...that's not going to change anything. I'm disappointed, but proud of our season and am very hopeful and look forward to next season...WITH Jake.

If I remember correctly there were a couple "big games" that we had to win this season in order to even get to to the playoffs.

Holy crap you have no idea what you are talking about, ROFL.

We were the #2 seed, the #6 seed was 9-6-1, we were 12-4.

So please tell me how "there were a couple of big games we HAD to win this season in order to even get to the playoffs."

Then I proved my point. Take away only 2 or 3 of our wins and we wouldn't even made the playoffs. All the whole regular season is is one long playoff round. Last time I checked, you have to have a certain record to even be eligible for the playoffs...had we lost only 2 - 3 more games than we did, we wouldn't have even been playing last night. Those are the games we HAD TO WIN in order to even get to the playoffs.

    • Derrick Brown was one player I never called or even suggested was a bust . Dude was young and hadn't even hit his stride. It takes time to learn the position. The thing I appreciated about him is that he kept improving season after season. He got paid and keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny.
    • How many teams coddle their QB the way Bryce has been coddled? I have never seen any other team in the NFL EVER baby a QB the way that Bryce has been.  Bryce was named day 1 starter his first year. It was obvious he didnt deserve it. He wasnt ready as evidenced by the worst rookie year in NFL history.  So let's move to year 2. He's named starter again with no competition in TC and is benched 2 games later. We have the ghost of a backup in Dalton who is so bad he can only beat Vegas and let's remember, the only reason he lost his starting job was a car accident, not because Bryce actually beat him out in practice.  And year 3. We sign Dalton again, who already proved he couldn't be depended on to put an even remotely passable performance on the field, and bring back Jack Plummer, who was even worse than last year. It was obvious he was nothing more than a pretend body in an attempt to create an illusion of some type of attempt to find a backup.  Then we start again with garbage play again and Bryce gets benched with a phantom injury, and the ghost of the ghost of Dalton breaks his thumb on the first drive and craps the field all over again. If we had actually made an attempt to find a legitimate QB2, it's possible Bryce doesn't step on the field again. Bryce is not agood QB and if we had any other mediocre QB, our record would be the same or better.  Bryce is not entrenched. He's been placed, protected and sheltered from ever having to face a  real QB competition in TC. Richardson and Levis both were ass and both were benched and eventually replaced.  Do I expect Baker to face competition in camp? Sure. I expect Tampa to find the best QB2 they can at price that fits their cap and resources and system and get him up to speed. If he's better than Baker, and if he's better by a significant margin, that's best for the team. The ultimate goal is a Super Bowl. Bellichek was constantly getting QB2s with the GOAT as his starter. He knew the value and that was realized when Cassell led them to an 11-5 record as a backup.  You and I may think differently than the people that matter but I will say it again. If you're afraid to bring in a capable backup, especially after the debacle of last year. The starting role wasn't earned, it was given, and that's loser mentality.
    • I would have done the same thing.  LSU is a much better job than Ole Miss.  Plus the enormous contract and every advantage a college team can offer in terms of recruiting and facilities and tradition etc
