Ryan Kalil looked somewhere just north of awful his rookie year playing in relief of Justin Hartwig. Year two? Big difference.

Tony Fiammetta might be making that same transition this season. He looked lost his rookie year. Last night? Looked strong.

Some might remember a highlight of Reggie White playing with one injured arm but throwing - literally, throwing - a rookie offensive tackle backward using a club move. Anyone giving up on that young tackle would have been giving up on Larry Allen, who had a stellar career with the Cowboys as a guard.

One of the toughest things any NFL coach has to do is to separate which guys just don't have it fro the guys that just need a little time to develop.

To their credit, the Panthers under John Fox have been fairly good at this, but there have been some notable mistakes (Eric Shelton, anyone?)

We have to hope that in the cases of guys like Dwayne Jarrett and Armanti Edwards, the Panthers will be making the right decisions again.

For now though, there's a lot to speculate about.

I'm not sure it's fair to throw in Dwayne Jarrett with the young rooks. This is his third season. At some point, he has to produce.

As far as Edwards goes, I'm definitely willing to give him more time, but what concerns me is that we essentially drafted him as an athlete. I didn't see an athlete last night. Hopefully it was just indecisiveness and inexperience, but he looked like he had cement boots on last night. I didn't see any quickness or explosiveness out of him which is essentially why we drafted him. I'll give him some time, but I'm officially concerned.

Our complete inability thus far to develop a WR prospect is probably THE most concerning thing regarding our young WR corps. Steve Smith is the only WR that this staff has ever developed successfully. I know we have a new WR coach and I hope he's a good one, because God knows we need him to work miracles.

There are a fair share of guys for whom the proverbial "light goes on" around season three or four. Still hoping Jarrett is that guy, but not seeing it yet. Mental mistakes like not knowing where to line up are excusable for a rookie. A fourth year guy? Not so much.

Worth remembering that we do have a new receiver coach this year, though.

Yeah, I mentioned the new WR coach. Unfortunately, like you mentioned, I just don't see "the light going on" for a guy who still struggles to line up properly. At this point, that should be automatic. Not lining up properly at this stage in your career doesn't point to a lack of experience or seasoning - it points to lack of studying the playbook or all out stupidity.

By the way, are you the same Mr. Scot who used to post as Panther Insider?

Patience...80% of the posters here have none. At about this time two years ago, Jonathan Stewart was a bust, according to those folks. At about this time two years ago, people were already starting to give up on Matt Moore because he had a bad preseason outing. Thomas Davis would have been cut as a rookie if many people here had their say. Last year at about this time, Sherrod Martin was a wasted pick. Now, Armanti Edwards is a wasted pick because he played like a rookie learning several new positions instead of looking like Steve Smith in his prime. It just goes on and on...

Yeah. On the original Panther board and a few others too.

My hope for Jarrett is that the light goes on. My fear is that he's forgotten to pay his electric bill.

Martin and Davis were both victims of coaching mistakes too (position switches and reverse position switches).

Steve Smith is a great example. Through his first few years, a lot of folks believed he'd never be anything but a return man. That was a common thought when the whole "marginal receiver' flap hit the fan. A lot of folks don't remember that, these days.

I've a little hope when it comes to Jarrett also. I think he could be a valuable asset with Moore as the starter now. Then again, with a qb that actually spreads the ball around on a regular basis, who knows what other gems may emerge from the heap that is our wr corp?

    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
