Early look at the Bengals

You'd think there would be an inherit desire to confuse, given that they're facing a rookie QB, but the Bengals have actually found success by simplifying their defense rather than making it more complex.

Mike Zimmer's side ran a stripped-down game plan against Baltimore, and it resulted in a win over the Ravens, holding a potentially explosive offense to just 259 yards and 4-of-15 third-down conversions in their 15-10 win over Baltimore. The defensive coordinator told the team's website that he had too many checks against the Patriots the first week, saying his Ravens plan was "simpler but not simple."

-- Of course, the Bengals have plenty of experience going against rookie QBs, as Sunday's game against Jimmy Clausen and the Panthers will be their 14th under coach Marvin Lewis (who took over in 2003). They're 6-7 in those games.

-- It'll be interesting to see how healthy the Bengals passing game is this week, as WR Chad Ochocinco said on twitter the other day that he had a cracked rib.

Then again, he says a lot. We'll see.

-- Looks like Bengals QB Carson Palmer is all the way back from his 2008 elbow injury, after leading them to a division title last year.

Of course, he's always been pretty good.

Palmer threw what was perhaps one of the prettiest passes ever thrown against the Panthers in the 2006 meeting there.

On a windy and raw October day, Palmer threw a ridiculous fourth-and-1 pass that the artist then known as Chad Johnson caught while stumbling for a 32-yard gain. That set up a game-winning touchdown by T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Like a golfer playing a hook, Palmer's pass appeared to start out of bounds but came back safely, foiling what was actually excellent coverage by Chris Gamble. It was truly a pass that only one guy was going to catch, and it was his guy.

-- While the offense gains all the attention for the Bengals, their defense has played exceptionally, with four interceptions last week against Baltimore. CBs Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph (Rock Hill, Northwestern HS) have quietly become one of the league's top tandems, with Hall pulling in his 15th interception last week. Joseph has 11 career picks.

    • Im not firm on many things football, but this statement or belief or strategy I am 100% for. Full Offseason the goal is to make the playoffs. Week 1, 1000% I want to win. Weeks 2-10,  1000% I want to win. Until the math stats 0.000000000% chance at NO playoffs, I want to win. *Once* there's no chance at the playoffs, I want to 100% lose every game until the end. You are still loser at 2-15 or 5-12, I want to never lose like this again. I want the best value for losing and suffering. Again the only goal is playoffs. Once in the playoffs anything can happen, I want to win the whole dam show. If you happen to lose in the first round, that's perfectly fine and lets work hard this upcoming off-season to get another chance to make them.  This is the ONLY way to play in the NFL. Anyone not understanding this method of strategy, please call your doctor for a visit...
    • Purdy's good but at the end of the day you're paying first class money for a business class seat.  It's a big problem with the salary cap.  QBs take most of it whether they are Pat Mahomes or not.
    • Purdy saved the 49ers from that three 1st picks for Trey Lance. People forget that. People also forget he should have MVP votes for the 23 season. He's been any where from the 8th(his best/23) to 14th ranked QB, he's legit and guys around top 10 get paid as QBs.....guys in 28th get paid too, he's 4x the QB Trevor Lawrence is and better than BY by miles as well...even without CMC, Samuel(whos a RB playing WE), and half the OL.    *BUT*    You non-believers missed this ultra important mistake that honestly made me reconsider all the praise I gave him. https://www.si.com/nfl/49ers/news/49ers-qb-brock-purdy-throws-blind-40-percent   That's is damming to my case and reset my thinking of his. That's nuclear scary now and I need some time.  too honest for me to overlook.
