Smoke Route

They ran a lot of WR screens at Notre Dame to account for their putrid Offensive line. When you don't have enough time to run a slant.. run a WR screen. The Smoke route is essentially a screen, but instead of blockers you're using that initial Cushion to gain some quick yardage. A lot of teams have since accounted for it and will even bait you into using it, a smart corner can pick that off.

I expect the smoke route to be officially dead, but screens are on the rise.

Haven't seen it in a minute. With Clausen's quick release, I'm anxious to see him connect with Smitty on one. Smitty's gonna burn em! :sifone:

As Seamonk intimated, the smoke route is good for 5 yards if the corner is playing back. What you hope is to show it a few times, have the corner bite on it, and then throw over the top for a big gain before the safety can recover and get over there.

You sometimes can shake the corner and get a big gain but most of the time it is a quick hitter for 5 yards or so.

I like Screens as well if we actually think we can run one successfully.

i think the hot read needs to be changed to a quick slant. smoke is, what, about 5 years old now?

Depending on how far off the line the DB is (and probably depending too on who the DB is), it can still work.

During offseason I re-watch a couple of my favorite games from the DVR (Giants & Minny games were worth watching again!). In last year's Giant's game, Smitty showed why he's so great at the smoke play. A slight juke and while the defender is trying to adjust and wrap up, Smitty's bent over with his free hand almost to his ankle, knocking the defender's hands off his legs - all as he accelerates. With Clausen's quick delivery and Smitty's incredible body control, it can still be a beautiful play.

    • Oh for those tired of the Mannings I have bad news, Peytons son Marshal already has college teams after him and he isn't even in HS until this fall...   I'd wager we have two Mannings in the NFL in 2030
    • Push em to the brink!!! Shut em down Freddie!
    • I tend to look at all of these guys and wonder how committed they are to doing special teams? It's a big deal when you're fighting for roster spots. And we need massive refreshes to all phases of the special teams game. And the idea that four or five of these players could see rotational use outside of special teams would be a win. This team has accumulated quite a bit of dead wood over the last five years and its time to take an axe to some of it. These new fellows have a shot to benefit from that if they can really push. That being said, wow that receivers room is crowded right now. I'm not sure if I was a vet player with more than 2 years experience other than Adam Thielen if I'd be too sure of my future here. Tet is guaranteed a spot, Coker earned his for sure and they aren't done with XL developing yet. That's only two to three spots left for the entire room. It's going to be very competitive and better for Bryce's future, too. Safety and linebacker are the opportunity spots here this season. There's room for the right guy and we may see a starter eventually from one of these UDFAs, either by merit or injury.
