It's all business. He served his contract and now its over. Lets just hope the Panthers front office can get the best deal for him. I have read alot of these posts and I think its great what kind of fans we have on here but he did his job and served his time. Kind of like my four year contract for the United States Marine Corps. I did my time. Yea he may of taken some plays off but I think he made some spectacular plays in his tenure here. I hate to see him go but I pull for the Panthers not a player. Just my 2 cents.

Here so hopefully all the Franchise Tag speculation will be right:

When can the Panthers Franchise Tag a player?

Teams can officially designate Franchise Tag Players between Feb 5, 2009 and Feb 19, 2009.

What types of Franchise Tag designations are there?

"Exclusive" or "Non-Exclusive".

What's the difference between "Exclusive" or "Non-Exclusive" players?

Any Club that designates a Franchise Player as "Exclusive" shall be the only Club with which that Franchise Player may negotiate or sign a contract. In order to designate an UFA or RFA as an Exclusive Franchise Player, the team must tender the player a one year contract that is the minimum of the average of the five largest salaries (as calculated at the end of the free agency signing period) for players at the position at which he played the most games during the prior year, or 120% of his prior year salary, whichever is greater.

If the team elects to name the player "non-exclusive" then the player shall be permitted to negotiate a contract with any Club as if he were an UFA; however, Draft Choice Compensation of TWO first round draft selections shall be awarded to the prior club in the event that he signs with the new club. For Non-Exlusive Franchise Players, the team must tender the player a one year contract that is the minimum of the average of the five largest PRIOR-YEAR salaries for players at the position at which he played the most games in the prior year, or 120% of his prior year salary, whichever is greater.

So what difference will it make to the Panthers how they designate Peppers if he is traded or signs with another team?

An Excusive Rights Franchised tagged Peppers can only negotiate with the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers can trade his rights to whichever team they make a deal with for whatever compensation the two teams agree upon.

A Non Exclusive Rights Franchise tagged player can negotiate on their own behalf with whichever team is interested in signing them. However, the team signing Peppers would owe the Panthers Two Number One Draft Picks in compensation.

Pat Kirwin on Sirius radio had an interesting take on this too. He basically started by saying he doesn't know much about Pepper's agent, but that he thinks this was a poor move for Pep. Mentioned that Pep is going to have a real hard time getting sympathy in this economy if we have to slap a 17million, over one million per game, franchise tag on him. As for the 3-4 desires, the idea was thrown out that this idea could be more of a ploy to get more teams into the Peppers hunt... In other words, this could all be about money. I'm not sure that I fully believe that, but then again, it is a reasonable take. They felt Pep may be disappointed if it is about the money, with the economy,it is likely the players contracts don't break as many records this year. Also, something to remember: The franchise tag is undefeated. If we can sign Gross and get room to slap the tag on him, he may hold out, but no body turns down a million dollars a game. Should he play like crap, then he'll only be hurting his chances for a good contract in the next year. Priority number one, has to be Sign Gross (remember that we couldn't negotiate within the season). Take care of other business, and get ourselves in position to franchise and trade Pep. And be grateful we got Gamble signed during the season, dealing with all three of those contracts this offseason would be even worse to deal with.

We'll get at least what KC got for Allen. Peppers is a much better run defender, and just about as good a pass rusher. Anyone thinking we don't get a 1st plus additional pick(s) is just being unrealistically pessamistic (possibly some lingering hangover from last week) or a troll from another team.

The truth is Peppers is a better overall player than Allen, not much older, is in his prime (with several strong years still ahead of him), and a freak of an athelete. I think more than one team will look at him and drool at what they think he can do in their defense. I see a real possibility of getting a 1st and 2nd for him...of course if it's a high first, any additional picks will be lower due to value.

I'm getting a bit "peppered out" myself.

My biggest interest right now is getting a new DC.

I will say that coming off the news of Julius Peppers wanting to leave, if the team turns around and announces they're keeping Mike Trgovac, the fan revolt that may result would make message boards a very "not fun" place to be.

Singletary quickly got Vernon Davis' mind right.

*Shudders to think of a motivated Pep with Singletary in his ear.*

Possible.

On the flipside, the thought of a guy who got upset over a tame public challenge from Jerry Richardson dealing with Samurai Mike?

    • Right, so basically what I said in my first post about this last night. Tepper needs to use that big wallet of his in one of the few ways it can be used in the NFL given the cap.   Give Scourton a bigger signing bonus but not a fully guaranteed deal. Everyone wins in that scenario as if Scourton is smart and hires good money people, he'll take that bigger signing bonus and use it to make more money in the end over the next 4 years than if he just had his fully guaranteed deal and a smaller signing bonus.
    • It is all confusing and layered. SB is the cash you get very soon within weeks or in simple terms, its what you get to sign the paper work. Players and agents can agree on contract but what to "wait" to sign......teams don't like that cause you can "Carlos Boozer" yourself. In order to get that ink dry, while keeping the contract the same, portion it as a bonus to "sign" and get the funds with ________ .   * But Ive seen worded contracts that split the SB or a 20% to a later date. The beans counters can fill in the details about why certain dates are better and save the team money.. Theres tricks to the trade and accounting is full of them.    Ugh another big layer, is SB can be used to manipulate cap and players. Ill try to give a example that makes enough sense. Believe it or not having a owner like Tepper is a cheat code for this. He has cash in hand, where as Mark Davis had problem making pay roll and had to move the team to Vegas....... Tepper can give you 100,000,000 SB right now and the team can spread out the cap hit. Another owner doesn't have or want to give the player 100,000,000 in cash, but offered the same guaranteed contract in roster bonuses fully guaranteed over the next few years........ Which one do you want??? Everyone wants the money now, not before another inflation waves hits in 2 years. So it does 'pay" to have a owner like tepper that's able to have real cash on hand, while it also works GREAT for cap help. Heres a good video, if you can stand coked up pat and mask look-a-like AJ
