My ex and his wife live on a beach estate (they're the "caretakers") on Islamorada and they love it. (The estate belongs to the Rich family ... as in Rich Stadium, where the Bills play.) I'll try to ask for some other pointers about activities.

Rum Runners on islamorada is a must, home of the rum runner drink and a great view.

Just stumble around and have fun!

Rum runners are the best. At Lorelei's (In Islamorada on the right with the big mermaid statue) make sure you get the rum runner with the double on top believe me.

Alright after consulting my rents about their tips...

Penny camp in Key Largo is worth checking out for snorkeling and stuff like that, as well as Theatre of The Sea in Islamorada (on the left).

If you drive down to Key West don't park on the side of the street, find a paid public parking area because you "my as well leave your doors unlocked" if you park on the side of the street...

Willy T's has great drinks, Hog's Breath, Irish Kevin's, and this place at the very east end of Duval St. (near the southernmost point).

Not sure what it's called or which side it's on. It's beautiful, though. Our kids, and his wife's children, and their grandchildren go down every summer for a "Kids in the Keys" week. I'm planning to go down sometime soon, I hope.
