I don't know about that, but if people are thinking that it's a bad thing that our opponents have another WR they have to prepare for, then those people can't feel good about anything, and I feel sorry for them.

i don't know if i rep the majority, but i've got a lot of other things in my life to be happy about that that i don't need to glaze my eyes and obfuscate logical breakdown of panther related subjects so i can feel happy about them

Fair enough, but this board has nothing to do with life outside of Panthers fandom.

Hell, if you really want to be negative though, you can talk about the Panthers running game or run defense, but there is absolutely nothing negative about a Panthers WR (not named Steve Smith) who is starting to play well. This has been a Panther fans wet dream for about 6 years now.

I can't really argue with that. I don't have that much confidence in Davidson either. I do have confidence in these players though. I also have a lot of confidence in Tyke Tolbert. This guy has a track record of getting the most out of rookie WR's and it's finally starting to show up here. Lafell and Gettis are both ahead of schedule, IMO.

I have to admit, that was a nice little wrinkle we threw in there. I don't want to give Davidson any credit for anything remotely intelligent because I don't think he's capable of such thought, but it must've been by design. I know teams said when Jake was here that if we sent Smitty in motion and he ended up at the slot when we snapped it that the throw was going to him...

What I liked about what you mentioned is that Smitty was already set at the slot before the snap most plays I remember in the 3 WR sets. It definitely leaves HUGE gaps in zone coverages to have both of them on the same side of the field.

Smith in the slot is a match made in heaven. He was probably drafted to play there but became much more than that.

Most true X receivers are taller than Steve. He overcame his height with timing, leaping ability and toughness. When was the last time you saw him outjump a guy for the ball? Cowher once made a comment about Fitzgerald that he was "always open 5 feet over his head." That's what you want in your X receiver. Speed, jumping ability and route running.

The prototype for a slot guy is toughness, RAC. Lots of time they are shorter. Steve fits the protype to a T.

I really hate the #1, #2 designations. We need someone to step up who can play the X. Hopefully that's Gettis.

Think of Smith in a similar role to Wes Welker for the Patriots.

    • Some people will shift the goal posts but he does still have to consistently help the team win, eventually. Not only help but be the reason. That's what franchise QB's do.
    • One of the Carolina Panthers' newest defenders thinks their pass rush can go from worst to first. ESPN's David Newton recently chatted with outside linebacker Pat Jones II, who signed with the Panthers as a free agent earlier this offseason. Jones comes over from an awfully impressive Minnesota Vikings defense—one that ranked first in takeaways (33), fourth in sacks (49) and second in QB pressure rate (44.4 percent) this past season. And despite a historically-bad campaign by Carolina's defense in 2024, the 26-year-old seems to believe his new unit can be similar—or even better—than his last. "I definitely think we could do something similar, if not better," Jones said, via Newton. "I've seen it before, so I know what it looks like. I look around the building and see we have exactly what it takes to do that." https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/panthers/2025/05/24/panthers-pat-jones-vikings-espn/83840667007/?taid=683219b347846900018fa10a&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=trueanthem&utm_source=twitter     It's the offseason.  Let hope spring eternal. (actually, I think we are much closer than this board thinks)
    • 5 total TDs against the Falcons was pretty good efficiency and he showed that ability to go off scripts and get 2 of those TDs rushing.  How many times did he deliver big time throws against pressure.  I agree we need to see this offense operate at high efficiency which starts with Bryce. When he does I hope the goals posts won’t shift to some other stat like QB sneaks lol
