The real reason we need Luck...

I think we are fine with Smitty, Gettis, and LaFell as 1-3 for next year. We don't need to panic and use our first round pick on Green. We can add another WR later on in the Draft or sign a FA. Hell, Julio Jones at Bama is rather special. We have much bigger holes to fill than WR for 2011. There is no pressing need to add Green.

Then we might as well not draft Luck, see if Clausen pans out, and just pick up another QB next year. Or just pick up one in FA.

After all, if this is the logic your using.

Unless you have sort of particular bias to Luck or something but...nah..no way you do.

Of course Fox had input, but so did the entire scouting department. The guy who fills out the draft card is Marty Hurney. He assembles the roster, not Fox (have you been listening to Mr. Say-nothing talk about personnel decisions this year?).

And obviously a quarterback can be found anywhere. But look at the odds--of the top ten quarterbacks in the league this year, 7 were drafted in the first round. In the last 10 years, there have been 27 quarterbacks taken in the first round--16 are currently starting. Contrast that with the 105 quarterbacks taken in the later rounds--10 of them are currently starting. So you have a greater than 50% chance of success for a high draft pick QB, versus less than 10% by trusting luck.

Finally, two months from now we'll have NO track record. Unless you think Fox is actually returning, or that the next head coach will keep Davidson and Sherer on his staff. And if you believe that, well...

You believe Hurney will be gone then?

Because if he is staying then there is a track record. And on Offense other than HBs and a hit and miss on the Oline, he haven't done very well.

If Hurney is leaving I might feel a little better about the future, but until then I really don't trust he or his scouts will do the right thing regardless of who the Coach and how much input he has or doesn't have.

If he is staying then I guess will be expecting the same ole same ole...

If Clausen starts next year and plays well, we'll get a ton more than a 4th for him.

See that's the thing: say we draft Luck, but sit him for a year (cos he's a two year starter and 20 years old!) and Clausen lights it up.....would people still want Luck to start?

I'm going with yes.

It really depends on how you think Clausen is going to turn out. IMO he had one of the best OC in the NFL coaching him in collage and I dont think he will progress much. I guess we will see at the end of the year.

Still the fact is one great QB can hide some other minor holes in your team. Just ask the Rams.

My opinion is that he's going to be a very good QB. He ran what was basically an NFL offence in college. That tells me a lot about the football intelligence of the guy.

Take Newton - his offence, from the shotgun, is one read and then take off. He has all the athletic talent in the world, but he's going to need AT LEAST a year sitting and learning the game.
