Think things couldn't have gotten worse? Think again.

If we trade the #1 away, it'll be for a king's ransom and would also mean we were traded a promising QB or had one rated almost as highly as Luck.

We really win out either way, provided Luck declares.

No Luck, no trade and we're reaching at #1. That worries me a lot more.

Remember how Hurney wanted to trade a 1st and I believe that 2nd, if not the '11 3rd for the Saints' #32 overall pick in '10 to draft Clausen.

The real question is why trade a 1st for the 32nd pick? If you don't win the Super Bowl the next year, the pick you give up is better than what you get in return.

If that happened, Saints would be in the playoffs, and having the #1 overall pick in the draft, while we wouldn't be picking until our supplementary pick in the 3rd round.

If Luck doesn't come out then we might very well trade down assuming we can. Honestly I think that Newton would be a fine choice particularly if we got an offensive minded coach with a history of developing quarterbacks. And guys like Mallett and Locker would be potetial number 1 picks if Luck weren't the topic of everyone's discussion.

I am looking forward to the combine and ongoing drafting sources to give us more of an update on these quarterbacks as we go. Of course by then we will know who our new coach will be.

In order of who I want us to draft, if Luck stays in school;

Newton

Fairley

Peterson

Green

T.J. Yates Someone on here suggested this. Seriously.

Mine is a little different:

Green (BPA to boot)

Newton

Peterson

Fairley

I don't like any of them at #1 though.

If we had traded the first pick in this April's draft, this would be bizzaro-huddle, with every thread crying to the world that it just makes sense for Luck to go back to school and get a degree. With everyone else tattooing "HATE HRNY" across their knuckles and muttering about Dwayne Jarret, Eric Shelton, and "the reckoning to come." In short, it would be awesome.

Not bad but we have wide receivers. We don't have a DT or a QB. Fairley and Newton should be the main choices, because no one's gonna trade up. We've been through growing pains w/WRs, now we have 3 who can play.

Is Derek Landri a player? Maybe. None of the others are.

I say Green just from a BPA standpoint. For straight need QB and DT would be 1a/1b.

I'm really not that thrilled by any of the DTs though, especially not picking that high.

    • Okay then. To me that means Russell Wilson was Coryell. Because I see the proposition completely in the Russell Wilson punt/pass put it up for grabs mold. Count on the receiver to catch it or knock it down.    And the reason I thought that was the intent with Legette is the abysmal downfield game from 2023. As in, there was barely any.   I look at it as if… the result of a deep attempt isn’t as important as the opponent understanding they have to defend it. So I was all for some 50/50s. Coryell, Walsh whoever.  I do favor the Coryell approach personally but also very much value versatility, it doesn’t have to be strict. Just make the defense defend the whole field, however you do it. It has to include downfield throws.
    • Sold, or in the process of being sold. Could be either way. Consider this for a second... Last season, our defensive coordinator steered what many have called the worst defense in NFL history.  Canales would absolutely have been justified in firing him, and no one would have blamed him if he had.  But what did he do? He gave Evero another chance to come back and prove he could be better. Does that tell us something about Canales? I think it does. Now apply that to Bryce 😕
    • Canales has never been part of big YAC offenses in the NFL.  That’s not his tree.  Not in Seattle, Tampa or here.  Every O he has been associated with basically has been bottom half of the league in YAC.  That’s what Bryce needs to happen though  2 very different things….and very much gets into why the middle school QB doesn’t fit
