Assistant Coach Options

And connected to Rivera, but would the Titans let him go?Former Eagles LB Coach Bill Shuey is connected to McDermott and was a student of Jim Johnson. He could also be a good choice.

I wonder about this. if Munchak gets the job would he be comfortable keeping the guy that almost had his job with McGinnis

Or the flipside: Would McGinnis be comfortable staying where he had a shot at the head coaching spot but lost it to a colleague?

Lotsa variables there. Impossible to know how it'll come down.

I suspect we have no shot at McGinnis until he hers one way or the other on the Titans HC gig though.

Well, here's an interesting development: Munchak becomes first of three to interview for Titans' top job

Munchak, a Hall of Fame player who's liked by Titans owner Bud Adams, is widely considered the favorite for the job, but the team also has other interviews scheduled. The Titans will talk to offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger at 10 a.m. ET Tuesday, and former Dallas Cowboys receivers coach Ray Sherman later in the week, most likely Thursday, according to a league source.

Notice whose name is absent from the list of head coaching candidates?

Granted, it's from LaCanfora, and he gets things wrong sometimes. If he's right though, interesting :sosp:

Possibilities:

- Edgar Bennett (RB Coach, Packers)*

- Tim Spencer (RB Coach, Bears)*

- Anthony Lynn (RB Coach, Jets)

- Jimmy Raye (former OC, 49ers)

- Gene Huey (former RB Coach, Colts)

There are others out there, for sure. These are the names I know of, right now.

Rivera had indicated in his presser that we were waiting on at least one offensice coach from a playoff team, but the only one we've hired that fits that profile wasn't actually expected to be available (Matsko).

That's what makes me think we were waiting on someone from one of the final four teams, but at this point, hard to say for sure.

I'm wondering if they are consulting with any of the players *cough* D-Will *cough* to get a feel of a preferance since Skipper wasn't retained. Let's say taking a page from the Smitty-Graves reunion.

In fairness, there are good reasons to hire Graves other than just as a favor to Smith.

True, but it sure appears that it will go a long way keeping Smitty in the fold here in Carolina.

My point being, Williams was the most adament about Skipper's retention and since he wasn't, I wonder if they would bring in a sentimetal choice for DeAngelo since he is a free agent after all. The organization just booted his mentor, so there is going to be some toes stepped on. Again, if there is an apeasement hire out there, I wonder if Rivera/Hurney consider that coaching prospect to mend fences.

I disagree with Gantt in that his assessment of the Skipper interview was that it was just so they could say "hey, we tried". I think Rivera was willing to give him an honest chance, but as he made clear in the presser, it's "his way or the highway" on philosophy. My guess: For whatever reason, Skipper just didn't fit.

    • I see they blamed Slavin for the goal like I did.
    • See this is the problem, you say "can't get off the line quick" and "can't separate quick" but in reality it's "he can get off the line better and create more separation" which are two completely different things. If he couldn't get off the line or separate, he wouldn't have put up the numbers he did and end up a Top 10 pick. But he can get better, and maybe more accurately, consistent with them both, and that will take his game to the next level.  These are things that are also much easier to improve once you get to the NFL than things like being a poor route runner or having bad hands, two of his strengths. Thinking he can't get open in the short passing game also shows you haven't watched enough tape on him, as he was used in that role so much in college with little issue getting open and making plays. And him not using his physicality as much isn't even something that hurts his game because he's so much more agile than a player of his size should be, which he used to his advantage.  Instead of throwing passes where he'd go up and box out a player like a TE or Mike Evans does, they use his athleticism and put the ball in places that only he can get to it, and he usually does (and yes, he'll still be able to do that against NFL DB's with his catch radius). But now that he's in the NFL, I'd like to see him get stronger and add that to his game because it also will help him take his game to another level. As I've said before, if he doesn't improve on those things at all, I think he's a Top 25 WR in this league, he's already that good.  But I think he'll improve on those things and be a perennial Top 10 WR and in his prime is considered and perform like Top 5 guy in some years. My expectations for him this year at 800 yards and 8 TDs (although I do think he'll get to 10 TDs) with a real chance at getting to 1,000.  But those expectations are because I think Thielen will lead the team in yards with close to 1k and XL/Coker each end up in the 500-600 range themselves, just too many mouths to feed this year for a rookie to dominate yardage, especially if we're running the ball well again. But if Thielen can't stay healthy or puts up sub 750 yards, then yea, my expectations for T-Mac likely shift to getting to 1k as a rookie.
    • Svech only 1 goal behind the guy they've pretty much already given the Conn Smythe to...
