Barton Fink is easily the best Coen Bros. movie

***********************Spoiler

I just finished the movie so while I haven't had time to think much about it, or read anything on it, I am pretty confused first:

Was the fat dude the devil? He said something to the effect of "Hail Hitler"?

Also was there really a head in the box? If so obviously the fat guy thinks its Barton's fault the wife is dead? Was it his fault because they made too much noise, or the fact that he didn't listen. Why did the fat guy save Barton.

Also since this is set in WWII, this movie obviously has some connections to that? Are the Coen brothers making a mockery of the army by making the head of Paramount pictures a captain---I seriously doubt that

Can something be said to the fact that Barton was always thinking and never acting? For example when the husband hit his wife, or the two cops were getting shot.

pretty much every time I think of particular scenes of the movie I get incredibly confused, by what it was trying to say

Maybe according to them thinking about life = bad, so maybe I shouldn't think about it and just enjoy it.

so I'm still confused about some stuff, but this website did a good job describing what Charlie symbolically means....really interesting stuff http://www.coenbrothers.net/viewer.html
