Ron Rivera: "Steve Smith part of the plan right now"

from rivera's statement, my understanding is he wants to fairly evaluate all of his players and see how they fit into his sytem, regardless of reputation and star power. if smitty can be a tool in his new system then he's in. but if smitty doesnt pan out or his heart isnt in it then he gets traded. there's really no one left on the roster that smitty can relate to. it's basically an entirely new team with new coaches and new blood. i could see why smitty might feel out of place. instead of being the old guy on the roster and one of the last from the good old days, its entirely understandable that he would want to start anew on any other competitive team. but, if rivera can get him to come to camp and buy in to his new system (if rivera sees him in it), then alls good. Personnaly I hope he stays and rivera can find a way to utilize him so he's again the most dangerous man on the roster and hopefully the league.

So Deshaun Jackson hasn't reached Smitty status because he isn't an asshole?

That makes absolutely no sense to me.

If Smith wasn't the man he was he wouldn't have recovered from a broken leg running faster than he did when he was drafted. He wouldn't have won the triple crown or carried his team to countless victories. He wouldn't have been the life preserve or the "shock" for our anemic offense the past decade. His fire took on that challenge. It's a quality that's both good and bad, but you see the results on the football field.

Well Kris Jenkins freaked out on me and it was to the point that Donny Shell had to come over between us....I had a big apology given and free merchandise as well. So playing devils advocate.....

Taking something you experienced and applying that to a conversation isn't "playing devils advocate." Devils advocate is taking something and arguing a point that you don't necessarily agree with.

Just saying...

"Fire" and an asshole personality are totally different attributes. Don't confuse the two and intimate that they are the same. Plenty of NFL players have had "fire" enough to come back from an injury, carry their team and be extremely successful without being an asshole.

I personally think that's an overstatement and a very easy way to simply forgive someone for their greatest flaw when considering how good of a football player that he is. Sure, he plays with a chip on his shoulder due to his size, but to say that he could not be as great if he did not have an attitude/temper doesn't jibe with me.

This is my bottomline statement on the subject of Smitty's fire/anger/assholeishness.

I'm going to bed.

What I want to know is where have these hints that Smitty wants out been? I have heard nothing of the sort other than people claiming that he said these things. I've seen nothing from the man himself indicating anything of the sort.

Speculation because his house was on the market and because he's had private meetings with JR. No real hard evidence that I know of.

Yea, that's what I figured. He's sold his house and moved to a new one before. He's also closer to JR than most players are to their owners (from what I've read, anyway), so "private meetings" don't exactly scream "trade me!" to me....the over speculation that he wants to be traded is getting out of hand. When he actually says something to the effect of his wanting a trade, I'll believe it.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth
    • The fact that this is even a discussion is a testament of the level of front office badassery that's going on.
    • Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
