As Top Pick, Fairley Could Bring Panthers Some Luck

The following article is written by one of our new writers Bill Voth who is a sports anchor for WSOC-TV in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mr. Voth is going to help us cover the Panthers leading up to the NFL Draft. Enjoy.

He’s a dominant force on the interior of the defensive line. He won the Lombardi Award, which recognizes the college football’s best lineman.

But he comes with question marks. There’s some controversial stuff in his past. Critics say he’s a “dirty” player. When his mouth gets going, sometimes it doesn’t stop.

So who is it?

I think with Rivera here, the dirty player image will get recast somewhat. Aggressive players tend to hit folks late or act "dirty". It is hard to have both aggressive guys and guys who are considered squeaky clean. I am not talking Scott Fujita or Gregg Williams type dirty which is intentional and systematic, but guys who leave it all out there sometimes cross the line. It happens.

So I don't think that Fairley being a talker and on the edge is a bad thing in Rivera's mind.

I might be the only one but I love the fact that he is dirty and has a Mean streak. If that his only problem then I can't wait too have him on this team. This Dline has needed an asshole since Jenks was traded. Being nasty and dirty is a good trait for a player in the trenches too have. Like a James harrison a player like that can bring the nasty too other players on the defence.

Do anyone remeber when Jenk's got into that thing with Sapp and it seem like the rest of the defence and the team hated the Bucs. We need that kind of player back now.

I have not problem with having a mean streak either as long as it doesn't lead to stupid drive killing penaltys.

I don't mind a dirty play here and there if it sends a message like (you will think about running up the middle again or it makes a QB throw the ball early).

Like the play in Atl years ago when it was was blown dead but Vick kept running and Jenks blasted him.

    • Unfortunately you just can't get through to some of these folks. The most successful season in Panthers history our #1 WR was Ted Ginn Jr who had just as many bone headed drops as he did highlight touchdowns. We already have the highest paid OL in the league two years running. We need a balanced roster more than anything else clearly.

I think it would be like getting two for the price of one really allowing us to feel more holes getting a wide receiver and another spot filled for nothing but two or three draft spots.
    • I saw a mock draft where Monroe Freeling falls to the Panthers at 19 and if that happens they'd better rush their card to the podium.
