Saints just released a good safety

If the Saints, a team arguably worse than we were last season, with a similarly bad defense (although not as historically bad as we were) let the guy go...

... there's a reason.

The only thing we could gain from grabbing him is some insight into the Saints' special teams efforts. And that's just not worth a roster spot.

Yeah, I know people are saying to grab him to bolster our special teams and I get that, but let's be honest... do we really think we're likely in a position where a better special teams gunner is going to fundamentally help our team? I wouldn't want to release anyone who we think has any potential either this year or down the road to contribute on offense or defense to add a better gunner to this year's roster.

Now if we want to add him and drop David Moore? Okay, fine. That's the type of move that would make sense. We drop our token core special teamer for a better token core special teamer.

I wouldn't drop David Moore, honestly. Moore, while long in the tooth and light in production, is about the only veteran presence in the WR room now and the only one with extensive experience with what Canales wants and needs. And that's probably why he made the roster.

Still, aging safeties who might make a decent gunner just aren't where you want to spend your money and roster spots. Even at vet minimum, he's not going to be as cheap or maybe as trainable as some UDFA who would run through a brick wall for a roster spot for rookie league minimum and a chance.
