Gil Brandt on Gabbert's pro day, not so sure Newton should go # 1 overall anymore...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing... he was all about Cam Newton until today.

And the plot thickens.

Just look at the film:

Newton- 30 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, 2854 yards with a 66.1% completions percentage. [while against SEC defenses]

Gabbert- 16 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, 3186 yards with a 63.4% completion percentage. [every pass was in the shotgun]

If you look at the stats from 2010 QB ratings:

Newton- #2 with a 182.0 rating

Gabbert- #69 with a 127.0 rating

http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/player/_/stat/passing/sort/collegeQuarterbackRating

I don't understand why Gabbert is beloved by so many.

All I'll say is that he struggled on the out routs. Which I would expect from a guy coming from his offense. But he overthrew one (which the receiver made a sweet grab), and two others he threw into the receiver's back pocket. Both pick sixes. One was caught and one was "dropped". All 3 not good throws. But he doesn't need to be perfect.

So it wasn't the greatest performance ever. He did good though so don't misconstrue what I am saying.

Do you base your NFL projections on stats or something else?

It is sort of a conglomerate of stuff. Stats are probably near the bottom of those but they do play some role in my evaluation.

But if they aren't the least important they are very close to it. he

I didn't like Clausen that much last year. I didn't think he would be as bad as he was though and I won't pretend I wasn't ecstatic to get him where we got him

I thought we got a pretty big steal there.

But his stats were amazing but I didn't like his release. I didn't get a good vibe from him in the Gruden thing. At least not compared to the other three guys. Most of his big passing plays came on plays where he held the ball too long, etc.

And I actually had him below The Golden Calf of Bristol. Only because of intangibles. Which have nothing to do with mechanics. I just can feel that guys respond to The Golden Calf of Bristol and he can win games off of pure will sometimes. And he would put the work in to be great. I never got that vibe from Clausen.

And I thought McCoy would be garbage and I am still not sold on him but he was definitely better than Clausen which I did not see coming.

So stats are about last in what I look at.

That was long winded answer sorry.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
