Tony Softli on Cam

That "Cam encourages Kids to read" video on Youtube showed me all I needed to see about Cam's character. The media doesn't talk about the positive only negative which is typical not just in sports...

Crazy how Mayock didn't seem like a big Cam fan but came away impressed with him after the Combine well atleast during the sit down interview he did. Anyone that has been around him talks positive about him and sticks up for him including our own GM.

also I've not believed at any point recently character would be why a team passed on Cam Newton. There's plenty of on-the-field reasons to pass on him (at least as high as we are that is). While I'd be leery about giving him tens of millions, I'd also trust the homework I did on him as a FO guy to reveal what we could expect from him. If he passed the Panthers checks, which it sounds like he has, then character isn't an issue.

You ever met one of those people that some people like and other people just plain loathe?

Maybe it's their personality, maybe their sense of humor, maybe it's because they walk a fine line between confident character and cocky a--hole, maybe it's something you just can't put your finger on, but for whatever reason, some people like them and others wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

(I've got a buddy like that)

The more I read about Newton, the more of an impression I get that he's that sort of guy.

Dan Marino was that way too. Boomer Esaiason also gives that kind of vibe. But there are also negative examples like Kerry Collins and David Carr.

Put a guy like that in a leadership spot and you're taking a risk, but then we already knew Newton was a boom or bust prospect.

Its not as if he using his own scouting analysis or grades.

Just saying what sources have said to him. So I don't think his career success is realtive here.

That's what all the others are doing too, both positive and negative.

Softli's someone whose opinion I don't take seriously, even if he happens to support what I think.

The guys I listed are guys I do listen to, and not all of them agree with me on this point either.

You and TRD have spent a lot of time defending Nawrocki though...just sayin.

Personally, I don't believe there is a defense for writing such personal comments about some kid you have never even met. I just can't get past this "fake smile" comment. Who writes that about draft prospects?

Right, and the other's career's shouldnt be realtive either, if there just repeating what they've heard from there sources.

In this specific case, I don't see why Sofli would be less of a source then the afermentioned, seeing as he simply stating what he's heard.

You mean that event staged by his agent?

A lot of people do that. Most are told they need to to enhance their image. Did Cam do it of his own volition, or was he prompted to do something? Would be interesting when he started doing these things...

Professional scouts when they give their reports to the teams they work for write things like that. They're the ones Nawrocki got the info from.

Did Softli say he met Newton?

A guy that reports what scouts are telling him.

Would you ask Matt Millen for tips on how to be a successful GM?

    • Jake in his prime was a gutsy QB. But just like with even someone like Cam. Father time is undefeated. It's very unfortunate we have a guy who is only 24 years old that has an equivalent arm to that. Absolutely blows my mind that our brain trust lacked the basic common sense to value arm talent when making a massive trade with ramifications for years to come. Unforgivable incompetence.
    • Jake, to me, will always hold a special place in my heart.  I really feel like for his era, he deserved way more love than he got, and should’ve had more than his one Pro Bowl.  He was a gamer with an underrated rocket arm. but let me tell you, after his Tommy John surgery, when he came back, I can’t remember who it was against, but it think it was a division game, he threw a ball that was supposed to be a throw away, as I think he was under pressure, and that poo floated forever and died right at the boundary where a defender ran over and picked it off.  One of the worst throws I ever saw.  His arm just wasn’t the same after the injury and surgery.  All that to say, that’s what almost every Bryce throw to the sidelines looks like to me.
    • And again, when watching him in college he had one distinct trait that I feel makes a franchise QB - on those plays when everything breaks down around him, he creates one on his own.  He doesn’t rely on or need everyone else.  That play last night on the final drive where he was getting sacked and threw it to Diggs before his knee hit the ground?  He does similar things all the time.  Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, etc., they all do it.  It’s what made Cam so special. but we picked a guy that’s the opposite of that.  He desperately needs someone else to make a play for him because he can’t.  Even that play yesterday on 4th down to Horn.  That wasn’t a great pass.  The defender was late and came down to make a play in the ball and Bryce threw it high and outside where Horn had to leave his feet and really use strong hands to catch it.  We relied on a 5’9” rookie playing in his first pro game to make THAT catch at THAT time bc of the early turnovers and a not great throw.  Crazy.
