Whitlock on Cam and NFL in general

Worse, there’s a vocal segment of the African-American community prepared to emotionally cripple Newton with claims of racism at the first sound of legitimate criticism.

anyone who has listened to the callers to WFNZ 610 can attest to this. So bad at this point that they just hurry through the call.

Its particularly stupid when it goes into bashing Andrew Luck and asking why anyone could ever think Newton isn't better than Luck as a prospect.

I also read a QnA with Cam this morning, the editor obviously struggled trying to correct the grammar and keep the quotes intact. I'm hoping for the best, I really am. I don't want us to be the "durty pussy(-cats)" or whatever the equivalent to the Vick-led Falcons would be.

He smells like Vince Young, looks like a fit JaMarcus Russell and throws the ball as accurately as The Golden Calf of Bristol.

and told to run real fast when he played at Auburn.

:)

Has Whitlock been reading the Huddle forums? In the first few sentences, he's pretty much figured out what people that question the Cam first pick have had to endure.

This column was supposed to be about why Cam Newton isn’t on my draft board.

Yep. I wouldn’t draft the Heisman Trophy winner with the first pick in Round 1 or the last pick in Round 5. He smells like Vince Young, looks like a fit JaMarcus Russell and throws the ball as accurately as The Golden Calf of Bristol.

Whether it's mock drafts, analysis or player breakdowns . . . we have it here.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=whitlock/060309 was his take on Vince Young which is referenced in the story.

    • Bingo. The dude is a baller no doubt and I'd love to have him in a vacuum but like you said he's gonna fetch a haul so the only teams it really makes sense for are teams with an overall good roster who they feel an edge rusher like Crosby would out them over the top in terms of competing for SBs. I'd be looking st teams like the Pats, Bucs, Ravens, Seahawks, etc. It wouldn't be shocking to see him moved. He may be more valuable to a rebuilding team in the form of the draft assets he'd fetch than he is on the field. He should still have several more good years in the tank at 28 but by the time the Raiders can reasonably expect to rebuild he's gonna be on the decline.
    • Crosby will garner a haul in a trade. I would be reluctant to make that trade because of the following: 1. Our overall roster is awful. We cannot afford to be trading away valuable draft capital. 2. He isn't the best fit(IMO) for the scheme that Evero runs.  I love the player but it would really need to be at a reasonable deal and I think he is likely to garner an unreasonable price if he gets traded.
    • In terms of need, EDGE is currently #1. Our pass rush is near league worst levels. However, I don't subscribe to "need" based drafting. BPA all day.  We do need to dramatically upgrade over Scourton, Jones, Wonnum and Umanmielen. That is likely in the running for the NFL's worst two deep. Not saying all those players are bad, but I am saying 100% of those players are 2nd or 3rd stringers.
